Printed cover with another cover printed in colors and a list of cultural events.On May 10 1919 the Association of French Homes organized a "Franco-American Matinee" at the Palais du Trocadéro in Paris to celebrate Mother's Day. This event took place shortly after the First World War and highlighted the burgeoning relationship between France and the United States.At the end of World War I: In 1919 France was still recovering from the devastation of war. L'ex-libris de la Maison Stern devient un grand « S » dans lequel se loge un lion dressé la patte antérieure reposant sur le monogramme « MS » entrelacé. Une main brandissant un outil de graveur et deux pièces d'armure un gant et le casque complètent la composition. En 1867 et en 1889 la Maison Stern se voit décerner la Médaille d'Or lors de ces deux expositions universelles. Par la suite Moïse Stern sera occasionnellement membre du jury qui décerne cette médaille. Dans les années 1890 M.Stern associe son fils René à l'entreprise qui prend le nom de Stern et fils. René Stern reprend la boutique à son compte en 1904. Parmi ses prestigieux clients la Maison Stern a eu l'honneur de compter l'Elysée pour ses menus et ses invitations les ambassades la noblesse et les grandes entreprises françaises et étrangères. Chacun participe depuis longtemps au renom de la Maison. Depuis les générations se sont succédé avec aujourd'hui une volonté très forte de conserver et valoriser un savoir-faire et des techniques qui tendent à disparaître.Engraver and printer in Paris Stern Graveur was a workshop specializing in the engraving of letterheads invitations announcements monograms heraldic signet rings and greeting cards. The Maison Stern et Aumoitte was founded in 1836 by Mr. Aumoitte who partnered with a young engraver Moïse Stern. T.his partnership lasted until the late 1850s when Moïse Stern took over the company. The Maison Stern bookplate became a large "S" containing a rearing lion its foreleg resting on the intertwined monogram "MS." A hand brandishing an engraver's tool and two pieces of armor a glove and a helmet complete the composition. In 1867 and 1889 the Maison Stern was awarded the Gold Medal at these two World's Fairs. Moïse Stern would later occasionally serve as a member of the jury that awarded this medal. In the 1890s. Mr. Stern brought his son René into the business which took the name Stern et fils. René Stern took over the shop in 1904. Among its prestigious clients Maison Stern has had the honor of counting the Élysée Palace for its menus and invitations embassies the nobility and major French and foreign companies. Presented to Natalie Williams on Sept. 20 1936.Bernhardt Wall was born in Buffalo New York on Dec. 30 1872. He studied at the Buffalo Art Student’s League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5000 comic cards. The year1915 marked a defining point in Wall’s artistic career. Wall visited Colorado Nevada and California making etchings of Indians cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region.Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books but he also printed and bound them. His books are in libraries and universities around the world including the British Museum Library of Congress the libraries of Harvard Yale Columbia and Brown Universities. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan Franklin D. Roosevelt Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States Theodore Roosevelt Warren Taft and Henry Coolidge. Other prominent individuals etched by Wall include Sam Houston Mark Twain Thomas A. Edison Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson.Artist and historian Bernhardt Wall 1872-1956 was a pioneer etcher and producer of fine press books who treated a vast array of subjects including Texas and the Southwest. Historians of fine press printing have compared him to William Blake. This collection of Wall’s scrapbooks publications and correspondence was built by collector Natalie Williams of Marshall Texas.
