Sarah Bernhardt." 4" x 2½" on mourning paper no place 1st August In June 1879 while the theatre of the Comédie Française in Paris was being remodelled Emile PERRIN 1814-1885 Painter Theatre Director and Impressario took the company on tour to London. Shortly before the tour began a British theatre impresario named Edward Jarrett traveled to Paris and proposed that she give private performances in the homes of wealthy Londoners; the fee she would receive for each performance was greater than her monthly salary with the Comédie. When Perrin read in the press about the private performances he was furious. Furthermore the Gaiety Theatre in London demanded that Bernhardt star in the opening performance contrary to the traditions of Comédie Française where roles were assigned by seniority and the idea of stardom was scorned. When Perrin protested saying that Bernhardt was only 10th or 11th in seniority the Gaiety manager threatened to cancel the performance; Perrin had to give in. 42773showing her in the rold of the Duke of Reichstadt in 'the Aiglon' wearing uniform and seated on a rock 5½" x 3½" postmarked Herault 21st March 'L'Aiglon' was a play written by Edmond Rostand which was first performed on 15th March 1900 at the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt now the Théâtre de la Ville Place du Châtelet Paris. The title role was played by Sarah Bernhardt dressed as a man for the occasion. The actress's performance praised by audiences and the press alike was admired for the extreme sensitivity of her acting in the climactic moments of the drama. Everyone agreed that the role the actress's tragic performance and the character imagined by Edmond Rostand were a perfect match. 'L'Aiglon' marked a new stage in the actress's legend. unknown

This copy inscribed to Mrs. Jean Hale Mrs Gladys Taylor and Rosamund Jean Hale was Edwin Markham's secretary and all three are mentioned in the "Etcher's Notes" plate in the book. The inscription is signed by Bernhardt Wall dated Feb. 25 1937 Houston Texas "from our winter etcherie". Plain brown boards with an imprinted etching on the upper front board green cloth tape-covered spine 13 x 1/ 1/4 inches unpaginated 34 leaves excluding blanks at front and rear 34 etchings/plates including the limitation page most etchings signed by Wall. Includes etched plates of the text of Markham's Man With The Hoe. No dustcover. Fine. Rare indeed 3 OCLC copies. "Bernhardt Wall 18721956 was a Connecticut Yankee who wintered in La Porte Texas his wife's family home for many years. In the mid-1930s he produced at least three books of copper-plate engravings during his annual Texas sojourns: Following General Sam Houston 17931863 1935 Following Stephen F. Austin Father of Texas 1936 and Following Andrew Jackson 1937. The process was so tedious and time-consuming that the editions were always severely limited; however these are the finished work of a well-rounded artisan. Wall wrote his books designed them etched the plates printed and signed each etching then cut folded gathered sewed bound lettered and labeled them. After his wife's death in 1938 Wall like the horseman in his colophon rode away-back to Connecticut where he later remarried. He lived his own last years in Sierra Madre California." 1722RO091.
