B&W and color photographs advertisements Elaborate program for a special presentation in Japan of D.W. Griffith's 1916 masterpiece INTOLERANCE with musical accompaniment provided by the New Japan Philharmonic and a "Chorus/Special Choir for INTOLERANCE." The screening of the film was accompanied by "An Homage to D.W. Griffith" a 70mm Super Panavision production projected at 30 frames per second that was directed by American special effects cinematography wizard Richard Edlund A.S.C. and featured a narration by the then 95-year-old Lillian Gish. Although much of the text of this accompanying program is in Japanese there are bits of English here and there such as the comments from various filmmakers including Francis Ford Coppola Fred Zinnemann and Martin Scorsese about the importance of Griffith's film and/or its influence on their own film esthetics. About half of the 128-page book is devoted to a nicely laid-out frame-blowup version of the complete film accompanied by the text of the original titles in both English and Japanese. An unusual item for the D.W. Griffith or Lillian Gish aficionado. The only thing I really don't understand is the significance of the small photo of El Coyote a landmark Mexican restaurant in L.A. on page 38; I've eaten there but I doubt that Griffith ever did. PLEASE NOTE that I have scanned only the central portion of this book's front cover which because of its size 10" x 14-1/2" will not fit on my scanner bed; ALSO NOTE that because its cover design gold decoration and printing on a black background does not scan well. So apologies for the lousy image. Missing the last few leaves very possibly as used by the actress. With rainbow revision pages throughout.<br/><br/>Set on the Eastern front of World War II a paratrooper force lands behind enemy lines and Alexei Kulkov Muni as well as local interpreter Chapman take several Germans captive in a basement which caves in trapping them all in the cellar. They interrogate each other and pull ploys on each other fighting for control while Kulkov waits to be rescued. Made during the brief friendship of the United States and the Soviet Union and based on the play "Pobyeda" Victory by Mikhail Ruderman and Ilya Vershinin this film was later castigated as sympathetic to communism and several of the actors were called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and subsequently blacklisted. <br/><br/>Set in Eastern Europe shot on location in California. <br/><br/>White titled wrappers noted as Revised Final Draft on the front wrapper rubber-stamped production No. 1031 dated August 21 1944. 1974WRCLIT70402Czech Republic: Polsky Film 1974. Vintage color offset lithographic poster 14 3/4 x 10¼ 37 x 26cm. About fine. A poster issued to promote the Czech release of ILUMINACJA a Polish film translated for the Czech audiences as ILUMINACE. Directed and written by multi-award winner Krzystof Zanussi it starred Stanislaw Latallo Malgorzata Pritulak Monika Dzienisiewicz- Olbrychska among others in a a "story of a man looking for a foothold in life" English translation of the Czech. It saw its US premiere at the 1973 New York Film Festival and wider English language distribution in 1978. The poster art signed "Z. Virt" differs completely from the Polish poster. Illustrated in red black and white and stills from the film with laid-in synopsis sheets featuring the "Fenouillard" family and oversize umbrella illustration on the rectos. <br/><br/>Based on the 19th century French comic by Marie Louis Georges Colomb Christophe one of the earliest in the country's history. Leocadie Fenouillard Desmarets and her family travel to France to visit the Eiffel Tower but end up on a boat headed for Brazil. They escape being eating by cannibals and sail to somewhere in the Arctic where they take refuge in an igloo. Their adventures take them to Japan where they imitate geishas and finally through Africa's riverbanks until they return home all without once seeing the Eiffel Tower. <br/><br/>Program 9.25 x 12 inches saddle-stapled 4 leaves with 2 loose sheets slightly smaller. 1961143969Paris: Cinedis 1961. Collection of 18 original single weight press photographs from a gala surrounding the 1961 French-Italian-West German-Japanese film. Most of the photos represent actress Kishi here as "Kiski" in kimono and director Ciampi on-stage behind a microphone and signing autographs presumably at the French premiere. Several photographs are rubber-stamped on the versos crediting photographer Jungmann or Andre also for Bar-le-Duc. Also included are a few leaves documenting travel expenses and locations associated with the film and a memo mentioning Kishi's travels signed by "F. Willkomm" at Cinedis the film's distribution company addressed to Maryse Martres dated May 29 1961. All photos and memo housed in original mailing envelopes with annotations in holograph ink on the recto of the larger. <br/><br/>Little is known of Willkomm but Martres Martin was a prolific French actress since 1948 notably "Girl on the Third Floor" 1955 and "The Happy Road" 1957 and she was later involved in press relations at Cinedis a notable film agency in operation since the Silent Film era. Kishi was born in 1932 and became a Japanese actress and writer. She married director Ciampi in 1957. Since 1996 she has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund UNFPA. <br/><br/>Based on the true story of Richard Sorge who was a spy for the USSR working at the German Embassy in Japan between 1935 and 1943. Holtzman plays Sorge and Kishi plays Yuki presumably involved with Sorge romantically and within the workings of his spy ring. Sorge's story was adapted once more "Spy Sorge 2003 a Japanese film directed by Masahiro Shinoda. <br/><br/>Photos range from 3.5 x 6 inches to 7 x 9 inches several with white borders. Collection of three vintage borderless reference photographs and a triple parallel fold color brochure in Japanese from the 1983 pinku film. <br/><br/>Directed by Yoshimitsu Morita director of the acclaimed film "Kazoku Gemu" "The Family Game" 1983 and winner of the Japanese Academy Award for Best Director for "Ashura no Gotoku" "Like Asura" 2003 and nominated for eight others.<br/><br/>Mayumi and her friend Mai make a killing when they open a barber and beauty shop which serves customers in the nude.<br/><br/>A Japanese "pink" film for Nikkatsu Studio's "Roman Porno" series. Pink film is a broad genre of low budget Japanese softcore films though often with artistic and visual inventiveness and narrative drive far beyond their American counterparts.
