With a frontispiece portrait of the playwright in volume I and 34 etchings by Adolphe Lalauze all with tissue guards. Front pastedowns with engraved bookplate of Andrew Smith of Whitchester. ◆IN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE CONDITION mostly unread and entirely unworn.<br/> <br/> This is a handsomely illustrated English version of the plays of Molière still considered the greatest writer of French comedies. The set is offered here in simply decorated but elegant bindings produced by the fine Edinburgh workshop of Andrew Grieve using the highest quality materials. Grieve was a first-rate binder but he is best known as the teacher of Charles McLeish who worked 16 years for the exacting Cobden-Sanderson as finisher at the Doves Bindery. Under the stage name "Molière" actor and playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin 1622-73 penned and produced satirical plays--many of which caused considerable scandal--at the Parisian theater now known as the Comédie Française. According to Britannica "the actor in him influenced his writing since he wrote at speed what he could most naturally act. . . . His characters are imagined as excitable and excited to the point of incoherence. He sacrifices plot to drama vivacity a sense of life. He is a classical writer yet he is ready to defy all rules of writing." The present collection contains the masterworks "Tartuffe" "The Misanthrope" and "The Bourgeois Gentleman" as well as the scandalous "School for Wives" and lesser-known works--33 plays in all. A scene from each of the plays is depicted in the etchings by the talented and prolific illustrator Lalauze who also contributed a portrait of the playwright. While French in content and with a text in English the present set is Scottish in production and provenance. Translator Henri van Laun 1820-96 was a French master at Edinburgh Academy who was encouraged to undertake this translation into English by his acquaintances among that city's intelligentsia. The books were printed in Edinburgh and bound there probably for former owner Andrew Smith an Edinburgh brewer and bibliophile. W. Paterson unknown

188097222Paris France circa 1880-1899. 1880-1899. Fair. - Quarto 14 inches high by 10-3/4 inches wide. Softcover bound in printed tan wraps titled in gilt on the front cover identified as "Partition Orchestre" in gilt along the top left and with the Comedie-Francaise's 1680 dated stamp on the front cover. "Partition Orchestre" is underlined in red graphite at the top of the front cover. The top and bottom edges to the soiled covers are chipped with tears to the top corner of the front cover and a piece out from the top corner of the rear. The front cover is nearly detached with tears along the spine and the rear cover is glued to the last blank leaf. Title plus 98 pages printed on lined music paper with most sheets stamped "Comedie Francaise 1680". The text is also printed in the appropriate parts of the score. The text block is shaken. There is occasional light soiling with signs of early worming to the top corner of the last 2 leaves. Good in a fair binding. <p>Titled: "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Partition d'Orchestre. J.B. Lulli" on the title page.<p>This copy of the score was evidently prepared for a performance as there are numerous pencil notes throughout.<p>Laurent Leon 1835-1913 was the music director at the Comedie Francaise Paris from 1871 to 1913.<p>The parts of the score are as follows:<p>Overture. Pp. 1-8<p>Marche. Pp. 9-10. At the head of page 9 is printed "Reconstituee par L. Louis-Simon Auger, né le 29 décembre 1772 à Paris où il est mort le 2 janvier 1829, était un journaliste, critique littéraire et auteur dramatique français. En 1816, il fut élu membre de l'Académie française, dont il devint le secrétaire perpétuel en 1826; il fut également membre de la commission du Dictionnaire. Farouche opposant du romantisme, il attaqua le Racine et Shakespeare de Stendhal devant la Chambre des pairs en 1823. Le 2 janvier 1829, il se suicida en se jetant dans la Seine du haut du Pont des Arts. L'activité littéraire de Louis-Simon Auger consista surtout à éditer des classiques, parmi lesquels Boileau, La Bruyère, Molière, Racine et La Fontaine. Il publia également les oeuvres de Montesquieu, Bossuet, Ducis, Sedaine, Dancourt et Duclos, ainsi que les mémoires de Malfilâtre, de madame de Lafayette & de la marquise de Caylus. On lui doit aussi un Dictionnaire universel de biographie ancienne et moderne, paru en 8 volumes en 1810 et des Mélanges philosophiques et littéraires, dans lesquels sont réunis nombre de ses notices, commentaires et éloges, parus en 1828. Illustrées 35 gravures taille-douce, sous serpente, hors-texte, d'après les oeuvres de Fragonard, Alex. Desenne, Horace Vernet, Hersent. Bon état.
