Das erstmals 1785-86 erschienene Werk des deutschen Schriftstellers, Philosophen und Direktors am Nationaltheater Johann Jacob Engel (1741-1802) das zu den wichtigsten theoretischen Arbeiten über die deutsche Schauspielkunst im 18. Jahrhundert zählt. Hier vorliegend die Wiener Nachdruckausgabe, noch vor der 2. rechtmäßigen Auflage erschienen. Die Schrift war von erheblichem Einfluß auf den Darstellungsstil der Goethezeit und wurde in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt. "Diese Blätter, die den Schauspieler in Posen jeder Art ... zeigen, sind von großer Ausdruckskraft. Zugleich geben sie ein Bild von der Schauspielkunst damaliger Zeit, ... Auch für die Geschichte des Kostüms sind diese vierunddreißig Tafeln, die Hauptarbeit der letzten Jahre, von Belang" (vgl. Lanck.-Oehler II, 84). Die zierlichen Radierungen nach Meil zeigen Stellungen und Gebärden, u. a. aus Stücken von Lessing, Goethe und Shakespeare. - Johann Jakob Engel studierte zunächst Theologie und später Philosophie und Mathematik. 1765 ging er nach Leipzig, wo er in Kontakt kam mit den Theaterwandergruppen um Gottfried Koch und Abel Seyler. In Berlin wurde er der Erzieher der Brüder Alexander und Wilhelm von Humboldt, sowie des späteren Königs Friedrich Wilhelm III. Zusammen mit Karl Wilhelm Ramler leitete er das Nationaltheater, schrieb selber Libretti und Singspiele, die nicht unerheblichen Einfluss auf die Berliner Theaterwelt hatten.
