"Beyond the Mountains" opened at the Living Theatre on December 30 1951 with Living Theatre co-director Judith Malina playing several roles. Julian Beck directed with music by Richard Stryker sets and costumes by Garrick Maxwell choreography by Tei Ko and lighting designed by Marjorie Spitz. <br /><br />This production was part of the first season at the Living Theatre's first permanent performance space at the Cherry Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village. The program includes an essay on "The Poetic Theatre" by Harold Norse a poem "The Last Supper" by Oscar Williams an article on "Vanguard and Theatre" by Paul Goodman who wrote "Faustina" which was performed at the Living Theatre following "Beyond the Mountains."<br /><br />There are also advertisements from local businesses especially bookstores and cafes as well as an advert for drawings by Kenneth Rexroth each priced at $35. Although he directed only a handful of plays "his controversial theories of scene design and stagecraft gave him eminence in the European and American theater" The New York Times July 30 1966 page 25. For instance he favored three-dimensional stage effects and more innovative lighting than the traditional footlights. <br /><br />Copies of this book in the original dust jacket are scarce to the market. <br /><br />CONDITION: Rubbing to cloth fading to spine titles top edge dusty bottom edge a bit soiled. Internally a couple of stray ink marks but otherwise clean and bright. The unclipped dust jacket has some soiling nicks and chips with slight fading to text. A Near Fine copy. Colorful program for the Los Angeles production of the shipboard comedy "Excursion" from Hallie Flanagan's Federal Theatre which was part of the Works Progress Administration WPA during the Depression. All the action takes place aboard the "S.S. Happiness." Random House published the play in book form in 1937; the play had been a hit on Broadway. No other copies in commerce as of March 15 2018. Nor do we locate any institutional holdings in OCLC WorldCat. A nice little bit of WPA-related ephemera printed in vibrant colors. RARE. <br/><br/> Belasco Theatre unknown books

First Edition First Printing.<br /><br />Single sheet folded to create 4 pages measuring 8 3/8 x 5 1/2 inches 212 x 140 mm when folded. Printed on heavy paper stock with ragged edges to the cover and second page. <br /><br />Program for a memorial tribute to Julian Beck cofounder of the Living Theatre one of America's premier experimental theatre groups. The event took place on November 25 1985 at the Joyce Theater in New York. It featured film segments photographic slides and tributes by numerous artists and writers including John Cage Jackson Mac Low Larry Rivers John Ashbery Amiri Baraka Kenneth Koch and Abbie Hoffman. Beck's wife Judith Malina also spoke; she cofounded the Living Theatre with Beck in 1947. <br /><br />Beck 1925-1985 won numerous awards for his theatre work. Late in life he acted in films including Francis Ford Coppola's "Cotton Club" and left behind a body of nonfiction and poetry. His 1972 book "The Life of the Theater" featured essays on theatre and politics. See The New York Times obituary of September 17 1985 section B page 6. <br /><br />OCLC shows no institutional holdings of this program although a separate search locates one at New York University. A collection of prose pieces by the British playwright 1932-2016 including short stories a play for television and a diary written for Swedish radio just before Wesker went to Stockholm to direct the world premiere of "The Friends." Wesker is sometimes grouped among the so-called Angry Young Men of postwar British literature although he rejected that label. Even so some of his plays attack Britain's class system and the exploitation of working-class people. He also tangled at times with the British theatre establishment which he accused of anti-Semitism. Copies of this book are uncommon in the market and signed copies even more so. SCARCE. <br/><br/> CONDITION: Corners bumped some light soiling to top edge. Internally clean bright and unmarked except for a tiny stain on the front free end paper.
