The Emersons managed The Drama Book Shop in New York for many years. A nice association. <br /><br />Also laid in is a typed letter dated Jan. 30 1991 from Uta Hagen to Jane Emerson politely declining to advertise in a Yale Drama program honoring HB Studio's founder Herbert Berghof. <br /><br />Hagen 1919-2004 joined the faculty of HB Studio in 1947 and married Berghof in 1957. She was a well-regarded acting teacher; some of her students included Robert De Niro Faye Dunaway Gene Hackman Whoopi Goldberg Jack Lemmon Jason Robards Fritz Weaver and many others. <br /><br />In this book Hagen deals with the art of acting and how actors can identify with the character they're playing. She also offers exercises for actors and discusses ethical and moral issues that arise in acting. Haskel Frankel the drama critic of the National Observer assisted Hagen in writing the book. <br /><br />Inscribed copies are scarce to the market. A terrific look at the acting profession by an acclaimed actress and teacher. <br /><br />PHYSICAL DETAILS: Octavo 8.5 x 5.5 inches; 215 x 140 mm 227 1 pages in red cloth gilt titles to spine in a photo-illustrated unclipped dust jacket hard cover. <br /><br />CONDITION: Light toning to extremities. First Edition.</p><p><br />Scarce booklet introducing the short-lived Radical Theatre Repertory a New York-based cooperative booking agency for experimental theatre troupes. <br /><br />The group championed radical experimental theatre as an alternative to commercial theatre. It assisted theatre groups in finding outlets for their performances and also organized some tours especially the Living Theatre tour of 1968-69. <br /><br />Despite its important work on behalf of experimental theatre the Radical Theatre Repertory ran only until 1970. The Universal Movement Theatre Repertory took over many of its functions. <br /><br />The booklet features profiles and black-and-white photographs of the various groups: Living Theatre; Firehouse Theatre Open Theatre The Performance Group Daytop Theatre Company Om Theatre Workshop of Boston Pageant Players Gut Theatre Concept East: New York Drama Group of Mobilization for Youth Theatre Black Black Troupe Playhouse of the Ridiculous Caravan Theatre Bread and Puppet Theatre El Teatro Campesino and the San Francisco Mime Group. <br /><br />This booklet is scarce.
