The Stanislavski Method developed by Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski is a system of acting that emphasises emotional truth psychological realism and character immersion. It encourages actors to draw from personal experiences use the "magic if" imagining themselves in a character's situation and analyse objectives and motivations. The method introduced techniques like emotional memory given circumstances and subtext to create authentic performances. It influenced modern acting shaping techniques used in Method Acting by Lee Strasberg. It's written in the form of a diary by an acting student with frequent appearances by the teacher and director Tortsov obviously a stand-in for Stanislavski himself. This volume published by Theatre Arts Books in New York is the first edition in English; a U.K. edition appeared a year later. The Russian edition was issued in 1948. Translated with a Foreword by Elizabeth Reynolds Hapgood who collaborated closely with Stanislavski. There's also an entertaining Introduction by actor and director Jonathan Logan who visited Stanislavski in Moscow in 1931. 8vo 8 1/2 inches / 22 cm xx 292 pages. Some fraying to the boards with a bump in the lower right corner of the front board. A bit of soiling to the top edge and toning to the end papers. Otherwise Very Good. (Das Tschechow-Kunsttheater Moskau, auch als MChATbekannt, ist ein 1898 von Konstantin Stanislawski und Wladimir Nemirowitsch-Dantschenko gegründetes Naturalismus-Theaterensemble in Moskau. Im deutschen Sprachraum wurde das Theater auch als Moskauer Kunsttheater oder Moskauer Künstlertheater bekannt. Neben den Stücken Henrik Ibsens und Gerhart Hauptmanns stützte sich der Spielplan insbesondere auf die Stücke Anton Tschechows: "Onkel Wanja" wurde 1899 uraufgeführt, "Drei Schwestern" 1901 und "Der Kirschgarten" 1904; 1902 konnte Maxim Gorki als Mitarbeiter gewonnen werden.
