The "Comic Almanacks" of George Cruikshank have long been regarded by admirers of this inimitable artist as among his finest most characteristic productions. Extending over a period of nineteen years from 1835 to 1853 inclusive they embrace the best period of his artistic career and show the varied excellences of his marvelous power.<br /> <br /> The late Mr. Tilt of Fleet Street first conceived the idea of the "Comic Almanack" and at various times there were engaged upon it such writers as Thackeray Albert Smith the Brothers Mayhew the late Robert Brough Gilbert A'Beckett and it has been asserted Tom Hood the elder. Thackeray's stories of "Stubbs' Calendar or the Fatal Boots" which subsequently appeared as "Stubbs' Diary;" and "Barber Cox or the Cutting of his Comb" formed the leading attractions in the numbers for 1839 and 1840. The Almanack was published at 2s. 6d. but in 1848-9 the size was reduced and the price altered to 1s.<br /> <br /> The change did not produce the increased circulation expected and in 1850 it was again enlarged and published at 2s. 6d. In this year some very spiritedly designed folding plates were added and this feature continued until 1853 when Mr. Tilt's partner the late Mr. Bogue thought proper to discontinue the work. 188600MV223London England 1886. On offer ALS Edmund Beckett 1st Baron Grimthorpe 1816-1905 known previously as Sir Edmund Beckett 5th Baronet and Edmund Beckett Denison. He was a lawyer amateur horologist and architect. In 1851 he designed the mechanism for the clock of the Palace of Westminster responsible for the chimes of Big Ben. He was also responsible for rebuilding the west front roof and transept windows of St Albans Cathedral at his own expense. Although the building had been in need of repair popular opinion at the time held that he had changed the cathedral's character even inspiring the creation and temporary popularity of the verb "to grimthorpe" meaning to carry out unsympathetic restorations of ancient buildings. Part of Beckett's additions included statues of the four evangelists around the western door; the statue of St Matthew has Beckett's face. He later turned his attentions to St Peter's and then to St Michael's Church both in the same city. In 1868 he worked with W H Crossland to design St Chad's Church Far Headingley in Leeds. ALS. 2-1/3 pages 1886. "I am glad my lunacy speech gave satisfaction to those who could understand it. When I went into the House yesterday I was told the case was hopeless but it evidently is not." 18851649<p>This copy of <strong>George Cruikshank's Table-Book Edited by Gilbert Abbott À Beckett</strong> is one of a Limited Edition of 300 copies published in 1885 by George Bell and Sons of London. The book is further identified as being Illustrated with Twelve Steel Plates and One Hundred and Sixteen Engravings on Wood by George Cruikshank – New Edition – With India Paper Impressions. The book which measures approximately 8 ¼ inches wide by 11 ½ inches tall by 1 ¼ inches thick has 277 numbered pages containing over 90 stories by multiple authors with the wood engraving illustrations by Cruikshank for those stories. The twelve steel plate illustrations are distributed throughout the book on individual unnumbered pages. The book is bound in contemporary half-morocco pebbled cloth covers. The pages have gilt on the top edges and are untrimmed on the other edges. The pages are very lightly tanned with text that is clear and easily read. The cover has some indications of wear along the edges corners and the top and bottom edges of the spine. The overall condition of the book is very good.</p><p><br />A book-plate on one of the front free end-papers indicates that the book was once owned by William E. Ambler. Although several people with that name can be found on internet searches the information available does not provide any certain identity of the book-plate's owner.</p><p>The illustrations accompanying this description show the book's covers the "text" Title page an "illustrated" Title page a page with a steel plate and a typical two-page with text and wood engravings.</p><p><strong>George Cruikshank</strong> born September 27 1792 London England—died February 1 1878 London English artist caricaturist and illustrator who beginning his career with satirical political cartoons and later illustrating topical and children's books became one of the most prolific and popular masters of his art.</p> George Bell & Sons hardcover
