One of 50 copies n. 24 on chiffon d'Arches paper with one original lithograph by Matisse depicting the portraits of Leautaud signed and justified in pencil printed in China paper. Matisse executed 5 portraits of Leautaud in charcoal and then 12 lithographs from which one serves as the frontispiece of the book. Un des 25 premiers exemplaires sur vélin Madagascar n° 19. Album de portraits de chats réalisés par la photographe autrichienne Ylla Camilla Koffler préfacé par Léautaud. . En avril 1936 à la suite d'un fait divers dramatique Léautaud avait écrit à un malheureux père de famille ceci : « Monsieur je lis dans les journaux l'accident qui vient de vous arriver. En voulant tuer un chat vous avez tué votre enfant. J'en suis ravi. Je suis enchanté. Je trouve cela parfait. Cela vous apprendra à être à ce point cruel à l'égard d'une malheureuse bête. Encore tous mes compliments ». Le père cultivateur à Saint-Brieuc avait tiré sur un chat qui s'apprêtait à pénétrer dans son jardin. Mais il blessa mortellement son fils un bambin de dix-huit mois qui fut transporté d'urgence à l'hôpital où il ne tarda pas à décéder. Celui que l'on déclara misanthrope aura eu vis-à-vis des chats un comportement exemplaire stupéfiant et désintéressé. Qui aime les chats aimera Paul Léautaud et lui rendra justice. Camilla Koffler 1911-1955 est une artiste autrichienne connue sous le nom d'Ylla. Émigrée à Paris en 1930 pour y poursuivre des études de sculpture commencées à Belgrade elle y fait la rencontre d'Ergy Landau qui l'initie à la photographie. Elle ouvre rapidement son propre studio et se spécialise dans la photographie des animaux se consacnt aussi bien aux fauves aux éléphants qu'aux canards et aux chiens. Elle livre pour Léautaud ce très bel album alors qu'elle n'a que vingt-quatre ans avant de donner treize ans plus tard un nouveau livre sur le sujet sur un texte de Marie Dormoy Le Chat Miton - préfacé par Paul Léautaud. Elle est considérée après-guerre comme la plus grande photographe animalière et fait régulièrement la une des journaux des deux côtés de l'Atlantique. En mars 1955 seulement âgée de 43 ans alors qu'elle photographie des courses de boeufs attelés en Inde elle tombe du capot de sa Jeep et se blesse mortellement. Ses dernières photos ainsi que des notes personnelles de ce voyage qui n'étaient pas destinées à être publiées seront publiées dans Animaux des Indes Lausanne à Guilde du livre en 1958 six ans après y avoir publié son dernier album 85 chats. His books banned in Germany from 1933 he then applied for French nationality in 1937 while returning his German passport making him stateless. Paris 23 décembre 1925 13.80 x 21.70 cm une feuille Autograph letter by Paul Léautaud signed with his pen name Maurice Boissard his pseudonym at the Mercure de France 15 lines in black ink written on a double sheet with letterhead and vignette of the Mercure de France where he worked for more than thirty years. Léautaud writes to Marcel Lebarbier his publisher at Editions de la Belle Page who had published earlier that year his volume of chronicles entitled Villégiature. He asks for his author's royalties: « Je n'ai votre lettre que ce matin mercredi. On peut très bien faire un mandat carte au nom de Maurice Boissard au Mercure. Le facteur me l'apportera fort bien car on me l'enverra dans mon bureau aussitôt. Même s'il fallait toucher à la poste qui ne manque pas d'enveloppes à mon nom. Mais une chose plus simple : vous venez à Paris prochainement Vous pourrez m'apporter mes droits vous-même et je vous donnerai un reçu. Mais le mandat carte est très possible si cela va mieux dans vos arrangements. Je n'ai pas écrit à Madame Lebarbier cette affaire n'étant pas à un jour près.» ""I only received your letter this morning Wednesday. One can very well make a money order card in the name of Maurice Boissard at the Mercure. The postman will bring it to me quite well as they will send it to my office immediately. Even if one had to collect it at the post office which does not lack envelopes in my name.
