A scarce copy of this children's animal comic book from influential French illustrator Benjamin Rabier. First edition of this scarce work. In the publisher's original quarter cloth with illustrated boards. This charming children's book chronicles the mischievous adventures of Anatole a unique piglet and a group of animals including a duck cat rats bears and chickens. Written and illustrated by Benjamin Rabier who became famous for creating the logo for Laughing Cow Cheese and as one of the precursors of animal comics. In the publisher's original quarter cloth with illustrated boards. Externally with marks to the boards and rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Staples have failed with text block attached by spine only. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age toned however generally clean with heaviest scattered spotting to the first and last couple leaves. Handsome interior condition despite a tear on the illustrated front page of No. 24 from December 9 1899. Le Journal amusant was a French weekly publication created by Charles Philipon on January 5 1856 in 8 grand-folio pages and disappeared perhaps in December 1933 representing 86 years of publication. The journal consisted three-quarters of illustrations focusing on social satire then comedy of manners with an increasing place given to theater and fashion. In the 1860s the editor-in-chief was Nadar. Numerous illustrations by Charles Léandre Henriot Ferdinand Bac Luc H. Gerbault Noël Dorville Charles Huard Albert Guillaume Crafty Mars Lourdey Stop Lourdey d'Aurian. Tight and VG- in its decorative plaid cloth with just a touch of soiling to the interior and light chipping at the rear panel edges including 2" of loss along the rear fore-edge. Still though attractive and very presentable and nicely illustrated in rich color by the author Benjamin Rabier himself. Tall quarto published by Editions Jules Tallandier of Paris.
