Paco Axel Lagerstrom 1914 - 1989 Was An Applied Mathematician And Aeronautical Engineer. He Was Trained Formally In Mathematics But Worked For Much Of His Career In Aeronautical Applications. He Was Known For Work In Applying The Method Of Asymptotic Expansion To Fluid Mechanics Problems.3 Several Of His Works Have Become Classics Including "Matched Asymptotic Expansions: Ideas And Techniques". In 1946 Lagerstrom Was Recruited By Hans Liepmann To The Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory At Caltech.5 He Was Later Promoted To Professor Of Aeronautics In 1952 And Professor Of Applied Mathematics In 1967 Having Departed Only Briefly To The University Of Paris In 1960-1961 As Visiting Professor On A Guggenheim Fellowship. His Book "Laminar Flow Theory" Initially Published In 1964 In The Theory Of Laminar Flows Edited By F.K.Moore Is Still Considered As The Standard Textbook For Fluid Mechanics. Anatol Roshko 1923-2017 Was The Theodore Von Kármán Professor Of Aeronautics Emeritus At The California Institute Of Technology Pasadena Ca. Roshko Is Known For His Contributions To Gas Dynamics. He Along With H. W. Liepmann Is The Co-Author Of The Widely Used Textbook "Elements Of Gasdynamics". He Has Made Research Contributions To Problems Of Separated Flow; Bluff-Body Aerodynamics; Structure Of Turbulent Shear Flow. He Completed His Undergraduate Education At The University Of Alberta With A B.Sc. Degree In Engineering Physics In 1945 Received The M.Sc. Degree From Caltech In 1947 And The Ph.D. In 1952. Most Of His Academic Career Has Been At Caltech Where He Was The Theodore Von Karman Professor Of Aeronautics Emeritus At The Time Of His Death. He Was Also A Member Of The National Academy Of Engineering; A Fellow Of The American Institute Of Aeronautics And Astronautics The American Physical Society The American Academy Of Arts And Sciences And An Honorary Fellow Of The Indian Academy Of Sciences. Roshko Received Fluid Dynamics Prize By The American Physical Society Aps In 1987. He Was Also Awarded The Timoshenko Medal In 1999. The Harry Rountree illustrated edition. Bound in the original cloth with pictorial boards and the original unclipped dust wrapper to one of the volumes. Illustrated by Harry Rountree with a coloured frontispiece and twenty-three coloured plates to both volumes. Collated complete. A charming illustrated collection of fables credited to Aesop a Greek storyteller and fabulist whose tales were characterised by the anthropomorphic animal characters. A two volume set featuring a complete copy and a smaller incomplete copy with the original dust wrapper. The smaller volume is lacking the pages after pp.44 but contains all twenty-four colour plates. One volume is re-backed and the other has been re-bound with the plates bound to the rear with the original spine bound to the front endpapers. Housed in a cloth clamshell box. In the publisher's original cloth re-backed with pictorial covers. The second volume is re-bound and includes the original unclipped dust wrapper. Housed in a cloth clamshell box. Externally very smart with minimal edge wear and the odd slight mark to the rear covers. Original cloth spine adhered to the front pastedown of the smaller volume. The wrap has archival repairs and a tidemark to the verso and minor creasing. Internally the slightest strain in places otherwise firm. Pages bright with the odd spot heavier to the front and rear. A very scarce limited edition facsimile of William Caxton's 1484 edition of Aesop's fables. Limited to 500 copies of which this is number 317. Reproduced from the copy in the Royal Library Windsor Castle. With an introduction by Edward Hodnett.In the original rough cloth binding with leather spine label. This copy is also handsomely presented in uniform chemise inlaid with decorative marbled paper and slipcase both with paper spine labels. Caxton was an English merchant diplomat writer and most importantly thought to be the first person to introduce the printing press into England in 1476. His was the first translation of these classic fables and is complete with a series of woodcuts throughout. Chemise and slipcase provided by Eric Sweet a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style.Loosely inserted are a series of materials including a postcard informing Eric Sweet of this book a dated written receipt and newsletters from The Scolar and Alliance Record. In the original rough cloth binding with leather spine label. Together with uniform chemise and slipcase both laid with paper spine labels. Externally excellent with only minor pink marks to the front board. Chemise and slipcase are also excellent with a couple marks to the chemise spine label. Card wrappers with fold-over paper covers in the French style the cover design incorporating the embossed figure of a woman with an eagle's head.Number 4 of 400 copies numbered and signed by Themerson and with the ''counterfeit signature of Aesop''. Next to her signature the artist has sketched a small self-portrait.Front cover very slightly marked. Inside the covers the glue used in producing the book has cause some staining. Very good indeed.
