VERY SCARCE Large Paper Copy. 2 Engraved title-pages and 110 plates All 112 plates are in fabulous unmarked condition; there is no foxing and the volumes are internally clean. Some leaves are slightly browned. Leather boards are slightly worn and previous owner's bookplates are present. Both volumes are bound in early perhaps original full leather bindings with faded gold lettering and decoration on the spines gold borders on the boards.<br />Page 198 of Vol I is misprinted as 891; the text is by Samuel Croxall. This is a true first of the great 1793 Stockdale edition with the advertisement leaf for Stockdale’s Gay’s Fables and the misprinted p.891 for p.198 of the first vol. The text is by Samuel Croxall. 1718ABC_45405Florence: Giovanni Gaetano Tartini 1718. Plain vellum. 12mo. With 90 incl. repeats woodcuts ca. 4.5 x 6 cm. One of the many editions of this extended collection of 400 fables collected and translated in Italian by Giulio Landi 1498-1580 an Italian author philosopher and classical scholar well-known for his description of the Island Madeira. As mentioned on the title the Vita of Aesop comes first composed in Italian on the basis of Max. Planudes Life by Giulio Landi. The corpus of the Fables includes no less than 400 animal fables some collected from other sources including Fables by Landi himself. The Fables are illustrated with 90 anonymous woodcuts. Several woodcuts are repeated especially at the end for the fables taken from other sources. All fables close with a moral here called Sentenza intended for the instruction and amusement of the youth.The first edition of the Vita appeared in 1545 that of the Fables in 1569 based on the Aesopus Dorpii followed by many editions till far into the 19th century.In good condition.l Cf. 17603939<p>An attractive copy of the fourth of five illustrated editions with Richardson's Life of Aesop. It was first published in 1739 with a title-page dated 1740 with subsequent editions in 1749 1753 two issues and 1775. All of the editions are scarce with ESTC listing four copies of the first edition two copies of the second five of the third edition. The 25 engraved plates include delightful illustrations in miniature for each of the fables with a brief caption and fable number given above each illustration.
