A nineteenth century edition of Samuel Croxall's edition. Illustrated with an engraved title page and over one hundred wood engraved vignettes throughout. Lacking the folding frontispiece. A charming collection of fables credited to Aesop a Greek storyteller and fabulist whose tales were characterised by the anthropomorphic animal characters. This edition was translated and written by Samuel Croxall and is notable for its addition of his 'instructions' to the end of each fable which taught the reader how to apply the lessons of the fables to every day life.Bound in quarter calf with paper to the boards Endpapers and blanks renewed. This book has been re-bound hard-bound in a fine binding of smooth green leather with gilt-stamping raised bands and gilt stamped leather labels on the spine. The covers show some light scuffing and sunning edge-wear and light rubbing to the corners and spine-ends. The spine is lightly sunned. The binding is solid. The contents are bright and legible with vignette illustrations but also with some damp-staining to the outer edge of some of the pages. First edition with receipt leaf with Bewick's thumbmark facsimiles of signatures and seaweed stamped on engraved nighttime scene. This receipt page is inscribed at the top to "The Rev. H. D. Griffith". A very nice copy originally bound by Riveire but now lacking front cover with damages spine aeg with a very narrow strip of discoloring top edge of the first signatures else absent foxing and thus deserving of rebinding. A very scarce work.A lovely volume of fables by Aesop adapted in to "easy words for children". Including 'The Jackdaw in Peacock's Feathers' 'The Basket of Eggs' 'The Dog and Shadow' 'The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' 'The Two Pots' and 'The Conceited Crow'.Complete with six colour plates.Ward was a leading Irish publisher who was known for their colour lithography for which they won a medal at the 1851 Great Exhibition. The illustrations have no artist signature besides that of the publisher. One of the sons of the business John Ward was a watercolour painter.Undated dated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Cambridge Libraries. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally a little edge worn with a few small closed tears and chips. Light handling marks and spots to the wraps. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the front wrap. Binding a hair worn the stamping dull internally some toning. <br /> <br /> A presentation copy of this delightful little juvenile inscribed by the young age 18 or 19 depending on the date of gift John Hay. At this time Hay had graduated from Brown and was working for his father Milton Hay. Lincoln had offices next door and after 1860 Hay became an ardent supporter. He would go on to become Lincoln's secretary and later one of his most eminent biographers and in time Secretary of State under McKinley and Roosevelt one of the most powerful figures on the American political scene. The world economic status of the US in 1849 was strong due in no small part to the country's ability to produce cotton cheaply through the labor of enslaved people. With the rise of Industrial Revolution technology people were able to move around the globe faster than every before - an urban American student learning French in this period was not only engaging in mental stimulation but actually stood a chance of using their skills to eventually converse with a real French person.
