The text next to the image of Sitting Bull reads: "If our people fight one tribe at a time all will be killed. They can cut off our fingers one by one but if we join together we will make a powerful fist. Come to Washington D.C. May 1-7." Longreads L.A. The May Day protests were planned by a group that called themselves the MayDay Tribe a part of the Students & Youth for a People's Peace an important group in the Counterculture Movement of the 1960's. The protests were intended to shut down the government from functioning by blocking major D.C. roadways and thereby preventing government employees from coming into work. Thanks to the implementation of pseudo-martial law military and police force members arrested 12000 of the protestors the largest mass arrest in American history. According to Kaufmann: "As one protester noted "Anyone and everyone who looked at all freaky was scooped up off the street". The tactical handbook that the activists were to use fell into the hands of the government and the protestors ultimately did not accomplish their goal of shutting down the government for a day. However they began a tradition of May Day as a day for activism. Historians cite this protest as not only the last major protest against the Vietnam war but as highly influential in bringing the Vietnam war to a close. Some of the student group's ideas were incorporated into the Paris Peace Accords. This is a visually striking example of mid-century activism and protest from an event that would shape non-violent organization and cooperation for decades to come. The material provides primary visual evidence of youth identity style and self-presentation supporting research into African American social mobility educational access and cultural expression in the post-1960s United States. The photographs capture individuals at transitional stages of adulthood emphasizing confidence aspiration and community interaction. Archive of 18 silver gelatin photographs depicting young African Americans posed in both formal and informal settings. Subjects appear in tailored suits trench coats wool outerwear and bell-bottom trousers characteristic of the period. One image shows a woman with close-cropped hair wearing a pea coat and shoulder bag standing outdoors near a monument with bare trees behind her suggesting a campus or civic environment. Another depicts a man with an Afro and mustache posed before what appears to be an office complex dressed in a suit and fur-collared trench coat standing with one hand on his hip and facing the camera directly. A group photograph of nine individuals captures a moment of informal coordination with one woman directing placement while others laugh or look off-camera indicating a candid pre-portrait interaction. Provides a comprehensive record of the conference proceedings organized by the Mexican affiliate of the World Anti-Communist League WACL namely the Federación Mexicana Anticomunista FEMACO comprising a detailed list of delegates from participating nations - including Australia Canada South Korea Hong Kong India Indonesia Japan Malaysia New Zealand the Philippines Thailand South Vietnam Jordan Lebanon Saudi Arabia Turkey Lesotho Liberia France the United Kingdom West Germany Italy Sweden the United States Guatemala El Salvador Costa Rica and Nicaragua - along with representatives holding observer and candidate status. A rare extant copy offering valuable insight into the operations and rhetoric of this unusual virulently anti-Communist and far-right Cold War organization later to be implicated in myriad allegations of wrongdoing. Light rubbing to the cloth extremities contents uniformly without blemish; near fine and housed in very good illustrated dustjacket showing small loss to the lower-right margin of the front panel and one short closed tear dustjacket now housed in protective mylar cover. Overall very good. Highly rare. Equally rare amongst institutional holdings. Corresponds to OCLC #123216394 which records only two holdings at time of cataloguing. Rare indeed. ¶ Founded in 1966 in Taipei Taiwan as a global coalition of right-wing groups opposing communism the WACL evolved from the Asian People's Anti-Communist League APACL. Supported and led by staunch anti-Communist figures such as Chiang Kai-shek Taiwan Park Chung-hee South Korea John K. Singlaub USA and Charles A. Willoughby USA the WACL backed authoritarian regimes paramilitary groups and anti-Communist insurgencies including the Nicaraguan Contras. It would subsequently face criticism for its ties to extremists former Nazis and death squads particularly in Latin America.
