19655Both from London. 18 February 1766; 18 April 1776. Both letters 1p. 4to. Both on bifoliums with second leaf docketed. In good condition lightly aged and worn. ONE: London; 18 February 1766. He begins with reference to the sending of two bills to 'Mr. Fairholme' then turns to the question of a receipt for 'Rob: Minto' which he provides with its own signature at the end of the letter. He then states that as a result of 'Mr Pringles Letter' he has 'lost hopes of Lord Nisbet'. Finally he says that he has 'had a Letter of form from Billie notifying Widderburn's Death'. TWO: London; 18 April 1776. Docketed 'Great Seal'. Begins: 'I have yours of the 11th with the inclosed Deputation on the loss I have sustained of my friend Mr Pringle. As you ought not to doubt of my opinion of you you may be assured that I should prefer you to every one of the many applications I have received on this occasion. But I dare say you would think me unworthy of that genuine friendship Mr Pringle exerted for me were I to allow my sense of it & gratitude for it to expire with him.' He has received 'a hint' that Pringle's family 'may want what it is in my power to contrive for them' and feels he has a duty to do 'whatever I can for that purpose. I shall find great alleviation under my present misfortune to be supported by your advice in every arangement sic whatsoever & shall endeavour to deserve it.' In the meantime he has signed the deputation 'that the Seal may not be locked up until I be made fully Master of the Subject I have mentioned'. Both from London. 18 February 1766; 18 April 1776. unknown
