Descluseaux is strongly inspired by with some variations André Gill's caricature of Hector Malot published in No. 116 of 1881. In André Gill's drawing Hector Malot's blouse is red blue in Descluseaux's version the pen yellow colorless in the copy and the bundle of books yellow red in the Descluseaux.
