1890h42469New York: Dodd Mead 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Decorated dark orange cloth very good binding with a few small stains light rubbing and darkening contents very good pages slightly tanned. 268 pp illustrated. Very uncommon in the trade. This novel first appeared in French in an 1875 journal with P.-J. Stahl the pseudonym of publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel the well known publisher of Jules Verne and other French authors listed as co-author. Apparently there was a translation into English in 1887 that proceeded this one by Sarah Herrick Kidder which is equally hard to find in the original. Marko Vovchok was the pseudonym of Maria Vilinska 1833-1907 a Ukrainian author of Russian descent. Her works had an anti-serfdom orientation and described the historical past of Ukraine. She is also credited with introducing into Ukrainian literature a number of new genres in particular the social story Instytutka including Maroussia. Dodd, Mead hardcover
