A non-contiguous assemblage of material from Sartain's Union Magazine and Godey's Lady's Book from 1851 and 1852. The volume missing the front board would benefit from being disassembled and rebound in it's component parts - half title pages are mis-matched engravings are found in odd places etc. We have not collated this volume and cannot guarantee completeness of the other articles engravings etc other than to note that the Verne and Thoreau articles noted in this description are present and complete and that the issue title pages are also present hence the pricing at well below "market values". There are numerous other interesting items in this assemblage including an early poem with color plate Godey engravings etc etc. Disbound. Contains 2 literary giants in original publications before they were well known - Jules Verne and Henry David Thoreau. The Verne piece "A Voyage in a Balloon" was translated from the French by Anne T. Wilbur. Taves and Michaluk V012 p 143 note that "This was apparently the first time Verne ever appeared in English . The assemblage also contains "The Iron Horse" and "A Poet Buying a Farm" both by Thoreau. These articles are notable for being early contributions to Thoreau's famous work "Walden Or Life in the Woods" published in 1854 which detailed his personal experiences and reflections near Walden Pond in Concord Massachusetts. One of Verne's lesser-known works Hector Servadac also titled Off on a Comet in some translations tells the story of a group of people living on a piece of land that has broken away from Earth after the comet Gallia collides with it. They observe strange discrepancies between the natural laws of Earth and those that apply to their surroundings struggle among one another to establish power and ultimately decide to work together to escape the comet. Originally published in French in 1877 as Les Voyages Extraordinaires: Hector Servadac Voyages et Aventures a Travers Le Monde Solaire this American edition was printed in New York the following year.
