Beautiful first plate with bright gilt with scratched areas in the lower border. Headcaps slightly turned in. Spine good but slightly sunned. Back cover very good with scratched area in the lower border and a small area at the top a fine horizontal scratch. Upper corners slightly turned in. Paper perfectly fresh completely free of foxing. Cohesive and solid volume. Very handsome copy. Sans dessus dessous is a science fiction novel in which certain characters from De la Terre à la Lune reappear. Jules Verne depicts the gunners of the Gun-Club of Baltimore planning by means of a cannon shot to straighten the Earth's axis of rotation to make it perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic. Le Chemin de France relates the adventures of Natalis Delpierre a French soldier visiting his sister in Prussia when the Franco-Prussian conflict breaks out. The story takes place in 1792. While Natalis Delpierre a soldier in the French army is in Prussia visiting his sister war breaks out between France and Prussia; Delpierre and his friends must then find a way to return to France. Spine somewhat faded. Headcaps sunken. Rear board good but with some soiling and the cloth along the lower joint narrowly split for 5cm. Paper fresh and bright free from foxing. Volume solid and tight throughout. Fine copy overall. Adventure novel devoted to the question of slavery and more particularly the slave trade by Africans themselves. Backstrip reglued so binding is fairly solid but should be handled with care. Antiquated bookseller's label affixed to front paste down. Soiling abrasions and creasing to front end sheet and paste down. Several old gutter repairs with clear tape and gutter completely split open around middle of book revealing several sections of signatures that had been disbound and bound back in without appropriate binders tape. Cracks to end sheet and paste down gutters but glued and solid. Chip to front end sheet. Page 23 small 3 word notation written over first 3 lines of text but still readable. Lacking the second plate at 230 otherwise complete. 2" tear to plate at p. 224 and 2 short tears to text pages. MICHAEL STROGOFF has been adapted to screens large and small almost since the genesis of the moving picture as an art form: its first foray into theaters was in 1910 at the hands of Thomas Edison's movie studio. The N. C. Wyeth edition illuminated the story in Brandywine style with atmospherically lit characters and sweeping scenery. This is an incredible copy of this Scribner Classic rarely found in the dust jacket. 9.5'' x 7''. Original black cloth pictorial paste-on. A group of travelling French circus performers struggle to make their way home from California attempting the over-land route via Alaska and Siberia.
