'Around the World in Eighty Days' is a noted adventure novel which was first published in 1872. It follows Londoner Phileas Fogg and his French valet Passepartout and their attempt to circumnavigate the world in eighty days. An early edition of this greatly acclaimed work. An incredibly bright first edition copy of Jules Verne's adventure novel from his 'Les Voyages Extraordinaires' series. Undated but this copy is known to be the first edition of 1884. With the publisher's catalogue CH Jauzac p.109. In the original cartonnage binding 'Aux Initiales' which was used for this book from 1884-1900. It features three medallions with the top containing the author's initials and the bottom the publisher's initials. Hetzel was known for these beautiful cartonnage bindings which were initially produced ahead of Christmas with a hope tat they would make a popular gift. Verne's works were elevated by these detailed yet affordable bindings. This novel is credited to Jules Verne and is based on an uncredited manuscript by Paschal Grousset. Its setting is South Africa in the diamond fields in Griqualand. In the original French. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very smart. Original spine very heavily worn and toned with the decoration largely obscured. Restored to a robust and useable condition. Very good. A group of French visitors to Prussia in 1792 find themselves trapped in enemy territory when the two nations go to war. First published in 1887 and translated into English by 1888. This copy seems to have been made up from spare first edition sheets as part of the first cheap edition which appeared in this binding. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. First Illustrated Edition of this curious tale. Wealthy Chinaman hears that his fortune is lost. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn't lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can't contact him. This Dutton edition was actually published in October 1880 exactly a year after Lee and Shepard of Boston published the first edition in English which was unillustrated and was in a plain binding. Although this Dutton edition comes from the British sheets including the same binding design the same plates and even an ad leaf for Verne's works with prices in sterling it was published a month earlier than Sampson Low's first British edition. It is bound in green cloth extra illustrated with 20 engravings including a map priced at $1.00. T&M The book was also issued by Munro at the same time in a two-volume wrappered format. Sampson Low's authorized London edition was published the following month in December at the end of which month Charles Scribner's Sons also published their edition dated 1879. Both the Sampson Low and the Scribner editions were titled DICK SANDS with a final "S". This is a bright near-fine copy with very minor rubbing at the extremities.
