This novel begins during the American Civil War with five prisoners of war escaping during the Siege of Richmond by hijacking a hydrogen observation balloon.Translated by W. H. G. In the original publisher's cloth binding in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally smart with some light marks to the boards a little heavier to the spine. Very light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spots to the top and fore edge. Edge wear to the dust wrapper with chips to the head and tail of the spine and some closed tears large tear to the rear joint. Wraps are age-toned with some spotting including to the reverse. A smart early edition of Jules Verne's science fiction novel also known as Off on a Comet; part of his 'Voyages Extraordinaires' series. An early edition of this work in a quarter morocco and pebbled cloth binding with moire silk end papers and gilt decoration to the spine. Binder's blind stamp of 'LENEGRE REL' to the boards referring to the French bookbinder Antoine Lenègre 1818-1867. All edges gilt. Jules Verne 1828-1905 was a French novelist best known for his thrilling adventure series 'Voyages Extraordinaires'. This included works such as 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' and 'Around the World in Eighty Days'. This work was originally serialised in Magasin d'Éducation and is written in the original French. Titled 'Off on a Comet' in English this science fiction novel concerns a comet which picks up thirty-six Europeans from Earth as it continues on its path. Illustrated with drawings by P. Philippoteaux engraved by LaPlante. An 8-page publisher's catalogue J to the rear of the volume. Undated dated through the advertisements. In a quarter morocco binding. Externally smart with a few small marks to the boards a small loss of cloth to the front board some shelf wear to the extremities and a little rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. With Illustrations all present. Original pictorial light green cloth all edges gilt. Published in November 1895 by Sampson Low. A tale of buried treasure. The pictorial front board cover shows a pinioned and gagged Tyrcomel on the back of whose left shoulder is tattooed the long-sought direction 77'19'N. A contemporary Christmas gift inscription on the verso of the frontispiece a partially cracked front hinge a common fault with this book a small area of loss measuring approx.1" by 2" from the paste-down side of the front end-paper where it appears a bookseller's ticket has been removed. At the rear of the book the rear free end-paper is missing. There is slight pushing at the spine tips and the spine is a hint faded. A very uncommon book and priced to reflect the missing rear free end-paper easily replaceable by a skilled book-binder if matching patterned floral paper stock could be found.
