Pages have a faint old damp stain covering the bottom half of every page and a small damp stain in the upper interior corner. Pages are toned and thumbed but in good readable condition. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 1st Printing A Good copy of the increasingly scarce 1877 First American edition of Michael Strogoff The Courier of the Czar by Jules Verne. A first printing with the 1877 date on the title page and published by Scribner Armstrong and Company New York. Illustrated throughout with frontispiece half-title vignette 90 black and white plates and a double-page map at the rear. This action-packed adventure is a departure from Verne's usual science fiction endeavors and many consider it one of his finest novels. Condition: 8vo. 377 pages and 6 pages of ads at the rear. The publisher's attractive green cloth pictorial boards with beveled edges stamped in black and gilt on the front and spine. Heavy edgewear with some fraying to the cloth corners bumped with cloth worn away at the tips. Spine ends chipped and frayed and some rubbing and a few scrapes to the back cover. A slight spine lean a previous owners name and small stamp mark on the front pastedown scattered foxing throughout and an unfortunate dampstain that runs along the upper and outer edge of a number of interior pages but does not impact the text block. Overall a good copy of this increasingly scarce first American edition.</p> Scribner Armstrong hardcover

Routledge undated catalogue at the back. 126 black and white illustrations by Riou. Light edgewear with corners bumped and rubbed wear along the hinges and softening to the spine ends. Gilt stamping is still bright on the front and spine. Interior clean and unmarked with tissue guarded frontis intact. The front hinge cracked at the gutter intermittent foxing to the page edges endpapers and interior pages. Overall an outstanding example of this 1875 First Edition.</p> George Routledge and Sons hardcover
