1874000565New York NY: Scribner Armstrong & Co. 1874. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Two classic tales by the famed French novelist poet and playwright behind Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea and other stories. This is a RARE first printing that is very clean with no writing marks underlining or bookplates. The spine is relatively tight and crisp given its age but the binding does show through along the gutter in places. The pages are fairly browned and there is some mild to moderate foxing to the pages and textblock edges. This edition was not issued with a dust jacket and the boards are the original russet brown boards embossed with gold gilt lettering. The design on the front cover is in near perfect condition and quite vibrant. The spine cover shows some fading or soiling but remains quite legible. The boards are flat and true though there is some moderate edge wear especially to the upper and lower spine extremes which are tattered/torn for a quarter inch or so. The rear board also has some light soiling. The corners are square but a bit bumped. An absolutely beautiful copy for any Jules Verne fan. This highly collectible very good first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Scribner, Armstrong, & Co. hardcover

1874121571874. Translated from the French. London: Sampson Low Marston Low & Searle 1874. 40 pp ads dated August 1874. Original orange cloth decorated in black and gilt beveled all page edges gilt. First British Edition published in September 1874 -- the same month as Scribner Armstrong's American edition. This volume consists of two separate tales. The first is a fictionalized narrative of Verne's 1867 passage from Liverpool to New York aboard "The Great Eastern" the largest iron ship ever built and one of the wonders of its age. Her length was 692 feet her beam was 120 her paddlewheels and propeller were larger than anything the ocean had ever seen and she was designed to carry more passengers than the Queen Mary. Because of her size "The Great Eastern" was the only ship capable of laying the great Atlantic Cable. The second tale is fictional more in Verne's usual style: a Glasgow shipowner devises an adventurous plan to run the Union blockade of southern ports during the American Civil War in order to bring a load of cotton back to his city's 25000 idle looms. This copy is in orange cloth we have also had a dark red copy and a green one -- no priority. It is in bright near-fine condition spine slightly faded as usual with this color cloth occasional light foxing on the leaves within; the elaborate gilt design on the front cover remains bright and atypically the original peach endpapers are not cracked. In our experience this London edition is considerably scarcer than the New York one. Taves & Michaluk V008; Myers 22.

hardcover books

1875158341875. a handsome set Together two volumes. With 129 126 total 255 Illustrations by Riou. London and New York: George Routledge and Sons 1875 actually 1874. 14 pp undated ads in the latter volume. Original terra-cotta cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt.

First British Edition of the two volumes that together comprise Verne's maritime tale THE VOYAGES AND ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN HATTERAS. Crewmembers sign on for a mysterious voyage to an unknown destination in a ship without a captain; ultimately Captain Hatteras reveals himself after posing as a member of the crew and announces that they are headed for the North Pole. Ultimately after shipwreck and days on an ice floe a mute Capt. John Hatteras winds up in an asylum near Liverpool where he goes on daily walks always facing north. The American edition published by Osgood in mid-1874 all in one volume was the first edition in English. Routledge published these two volumes in late 1874 though dated 1875 -- apparently not simultaneously as a note at the end of the first volume's text indicates that the other volume "will shortly be published". Some copies of the first volume likewise dated 1875 bear the front cover and title page title of THE ENGLISH AT THE NORTH POLE; regarding precedence it is believed that A JOURNEY as here came first because later Routledge reprints bear the THE ENGLISH title. Routledge subsequently in 1875 published the entire tale in one volume. Both volumes are bound in terra-cotta pictorial cloth though the cloth of one volume has a "pebblier" texture than the other -- a variation we have had before; Myers mentions only blue or red cloth and we have also seen orange-brown and green -- no color priority known. Both volumes are in fine condition slightly askew but scarcely any wear. The same color and in great condition they make quite a pair. Taves & Michaluk V004; Myers p. 65; also see Mistichelli A16. Provenance: both volumes bear a Christmas 1874 penciled inscription to the same person. unknown

Taves & Michaluk V002.

A bright copy of the first American edition of the science fiction classic. Professor Lidenbrock infamously renamed "Hardwigg" by an anoymous translator who took great liberties with the text discovers a runic manuscript that reveals a volcanic entrance into the earth's core. He grabs his nephew and an Icelander named Hans and carries them off into the bowels of the earth where they discover a lost world of living dinosaurs before making the perilous journey back to the surface.

Verne was already a household name in America and reviewers showered praise on his latest offering illlustrated by Edouard Riou and attractively bound as a gift book. The Chicago Post declared that the book was "one of the most successful he has yet written possessing in a high degree the wonderful invention and strong characterization which have made his novels famous." The novel has never been out of print and has been adapted several times for film and television. Scribner Armstrong and Co unknown
