Verfassers. / This book, a close examination of some works of two major Seventeenth-Century French poets, Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux and Jean de La Fontaine, strives to illuminate their indebtedness to the writings of certain Latin authors. In seven chapters, the influence of Horace on Boileau's satires and epistles is studied. We also observe Boileau's familiarity with Persius' satires and with one of Martial's most famous epigrams. Three chapters demonstrate the fabulist La Fontaine's employment of material from Horace. The influence of Ovid's Metamorphoses is clear in La Fontaine's retelling of two of the finest stories that have come down to us from antiquity, "Philemon and Baucis" and "Pyramus and Thisbe". The collection concludes with a study of La Fontaine's brilliant versified version ofPetronius' story of the Widow of Ephesus. // INHALT : Preface -- An Echo of Horace in Boileau's Sixth Satire -- Boileau's Seventh Satire and Horace -- Echoes of Horace in Boileau's Eighth Satire -- Boileau's Fifth Epistle and Horace -- Echoes of Horace in Boileau's Sixth Epistle -- Horace, Serm. 1.10.73-91 and Boileau, Epitre 7.87-106 -- Horace, Epist. 1.20 and Boileau's Tenth Epistle -- Echoes of Persius in Boileau -- Martial and Boileau on the Incompetent Physician -- La Fontaine, Fables 1.3, Horace, Serm. 2.3, Phaedrus 1.24 -- La Fontaine and Horace: Fables 1.9 and Sermones 2.6.79-117 -- Philemon and Baucis in Ovid and La Fontaine -- Horace, Epist. 1.10.32-33 and La Fontaine, Philemon et Baucis 7-10 -- Pyramus and Thisbe in Ovid and La Fontaine -- The Story of the Widow of Ephesus in Petronius and La Fontaine -- General Index Index of Scholars.
