The title tale is a version of "Cinderella'. Familiar stories "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Sleeping Beauty" are included though the endings are different that more modern versions as well as odder tales like "Bluebeard" . These early French tales are much more like the later Grimm's tales than Andersen's with the touch of gruesomeness intended to keep readers and listeners on the straight and narrow.
