Chez Tiger Paris 1802 8.7 x 14.4 cm Broché A Bibliothèque bleue edition offering a selection of tales by three major storytellers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: Charles Perrault Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville Baronne d'Aulnoy and Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Several of these tales have been rewritten and abridged almost certainly to suit the tastes of the chapbook-reading public. The Baronne d'Aulnoy's L'Île de la Félicité the first French fairy tale included in this 1802 edition was originally an untitled story embedded within another work by the same author the novel Histoire d'Hypolite comte de Duglas. The title it bears here was given to it only fifteen years earlier when it was published as a standalone piece for the first time in the collection entitled Voyages Imaginaires. Eight headpieces decorate this edition; in the present copy most have been heightened in watercolour as has the vignette on the title-page. The copy is further enhanced by an engraved and watercoloured frontispiece illustrating Le Chat botté partially tipped onto the front pastedown. Title in brown ink on a paper label on the spine untrimmed edges. Front board slightly warped small nicks at head and tail of the spine. First gathering held by a single thread only the gathering pp. 8188 is loose a few minor stains and ink offsets scattered throughout a 1.5 cm tear in the black-and-white headpiece on p. 65. On the title-page. blind stamp of a library with the initials ""HB"". Joints a little worn though nicely refurbished a four-inch superficial scratch on rear board but A VERY FINE COPY--the striking binding with lustrous leather and glittering gilt; the contents entirely clean fresh and bright; and the margins vast.<br/> <br/> This grandly proportioned bibliophile's edition of Perrault's fairy tales is sumptuous to the last detail with lush facsimile watercolor illustrations and a binding by a leading French artisan. Charles Perrault 1628-1703 reworked traditional folklore into sophisticated fairy tales for the denizens of the intellectual salons of Paris ending each story with a usually cynical moral in couplets. He is credited with inventing the fairy tale genre and the Brothers Grimm--not to mention Walt Disney--profited greatly from his oeuvre. These two publications include three of his best-known tales--Cinderella Bluebeard and Sleeping Beauty--alongside the lesser-known "Les Fées.†Literally translated as “The Fairies†but generally called "Diamonds and Toads" in English this fourth tale features a pair of sisters who meet a fairy in disguise and are rewarded or punished based on their behavior toward her. The son of a sculptor our illustrator Charles-Édouard de Beaumont 1812-88 had initially trained to follow in his father's footsteps but instead became a painter illustrator and lithographer working across genres and media through his career. He is best known for his watercolors and for his work to encourage the popularity of the medium; in 1879 he co-founded the Society of French Watercolorists with Jehan Georges Vibert. Benezit tells us that "as a watercolourist . . . his style is highly individual and personal and it may be claimed that his work broke new ground." This is evident in the present artworks where the characters--charming comical and terrifying--are depicted with graceful linework and gentle washes of color. Beaumont's artwork interacts physically with the text which is sometimes obscured behind a painted curl of smoke or pushed out of the way by the feet of the optimistic suitors of Cinderella's prince. Beaumont had a love for historical weaponry his collection was donated to the Museum of Cluny after his death and he depicted the knives and swords in the famous tale of the murderer Bluebeard with an almost gleeful accuracy of detail that clearly demonstrates his interest. The imposing binding with lacy detail calling to mind the decorations of the era in which Perrault first published these stories is the work of Henri Noulhac. Described as "a superlative craftsman" by Duncan & De Bartha who reproduce four of his bindings in their "Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding" Noulhac 1866-1931 was born in Chateauroux where he served his apprenticeship. He afterwards moved in 1894 to Paris where he established his atelier at 10 rue de Buci and gained a reputation as one of the foremost binders and gilders of his generation. In addition to the binding and the illustrations here the condition of this volume needs to be highlighted--the book seems to be fresh from the binder's atelier untouched by any reader. Gorgeously bound with exquisite illustrations most of which are lushly hand-colored -- they could pass as fully rendered watercolors done directly onto pages. Folio 39 by 30 cm. Unpaginated with text and illustrations on rectos only with leaves of heavy card bound in with tabs. 33 illustrations aquarelles of Beaumont are replicated in the two stories. Some illustrations remain in black and white but most were hand-colored and to a high level. Crimson morocco decorated with gilt borders featuring various floreate decorations and lattice work Rococo in sensibility yet symmetrical. Silk pastedown endpapers. Note that the colophon in the back states the book was created or finished off in December 1886 but the spine gives the publication date as 1887. Both dates are surely accurate. Condition: A few small spots of soil on the morocco. Light scattered soiling and/or foxing -- overall the book still reads as clean. Small stamp in corner of front blank -- back of FFEP -- from Easton Neston Library. As this discreet stamp is the only sign of a library provenance the book has none of the negative associations people would make of ex-lib and we have priced the copy accordingly. The 15-page notice on the life and works of Perrault by Paul Jacob appeared for the first time in the 1836 edition the same is true for the dissertation in fine on fairy tales. One general title in bistre and 9 frontispieces in bistre; each page of each tale entirely engraved with text and composition framing the text or as headpieces tailpieces. Publisher's binding in half dark green shagreen. Spine with false raised bands richly decorated with ornate compartments. All edges gilt. White glazed watered paper for the endpapers.
