199533331Oxford University Press. 1995. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Review of book tipped in. Dustjacket has faint creasing; 0.85 x 9.32 x 6.32 Inches; 240 pages; Theseus is celebrated as the greatest of Athenian heroes. This work explores what he meant to the Athenians at the height of their city-state in the fifth century B. C. Assembling material that has been scattered in scholarly works Henry Walker examines the evidence for the development of themyth and cult of Theseus in the archaic age. He then looks to major works of classical literature in which Theseus figures exploring the contradictions between the archaic primitive side of his character and his refurbished image as the patron of democracy. His ambiguous nature as outsider flouting accepted standards of behavior while at the same time being a hero-king and a representative of higher ideals is analyzed through his representations in the work of Bacchylides Euripides and Sophocles. This is the only work of scholarship that examines the literary representation ofTheseus so thoroughly. It brings to life a literary character whose virtues flaws and contradictions belong in no less a degree to his creators the people of Athens. . 0195089081 . Oxford University Press hardcover

Minor pencil marginalia to some pages by Jenifer Neils.; Stories take time to tell; Greek and Roman artists had to convey them in static images. How did they go about it How could they ensure that their scenes would be recognized What problems did they have How did they solve them This generously illustrated book explores the ways classical artists portrayed a variety of myths. It explains how formulas were devised for certain stories; how these inventions could be adapted developed and even transferred to other myths; how one myth could be distinguished from another; what links there were with daily life and historical propaganda; the influence of changing tastes and problems still outstanding. Examples are drawn from a wide range of media--vases murals mosaics sarcophagi sculpture--used by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The myths are mostly those that are also easily recognized in later works of art. No previous knowledge of the subject is assumed all examples are illustrated and all names terms and concepts are fully explained. Susan Woodford teaches Greek and Roman art at the University of London and is engaged in research for the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum. Light edgewear to DJ.; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries 11; 262 pages; An exhaustive study of Claudian's unfinished mythological epic with a text apparatus criticus and commentary. The long introduction begins with a catalogue of manuscripts; and this leads to an investigation into the manuscript tradition and the history of the poem's transmission. Dr Hall then surveys the most important printed editions of the poem. He examines various theories of dating and discusses the sources of the story. He concludes the introduction with a brief critical assessment of the form and style of the poem. Dr Hall establishes his text after an examination of all the extant manuscripts. The apparatus though very full is selective in that it records readings of younger manuscripts only when they offer something new. It also ignores trifling corruptions. The commentary is similarly selective. In general it discusses everything relevant to the establishing of the text and ignores points of purely mythological and literary interest. . 0521074428 . Minor edgewear along lower edge of DJ.; 216 pages; In recent years the subtlety and complexity of Apollonius' Argonautica have been better appreciated but in Dr Hunter's view the purposes and aesthetic of the epic are still not readily understood and much basic analysis remains to be done. The present book seeks to offer some of that analysis and to place the Argonautica within its social and intellectual context. A series of studies deal with notions of heroism; with eros and the suffering of Medea; the role of the divine; poetic voice and literary self-consciousness; and the Ptolemaic context of the poem. A pervasive theme of the book is Apollonius' creative engagement with Homer and a final chapter sketches out an approach to Virgil's use of Apollonius in the Aeneid. The Argonautica emerges as a brilliant and original experiment. This book is the only advanced study of the Argonautica currently available. All Greek is translated. . 0521413729 .
