Contemporary gold-tooled grained green morocco sewn on 3 recessed cords but with the tooling dividing the spine into 5 fields each board with the large arms of the dedicatee Marie Thérèse de France Duchesse d'Angoulême daughter of King Louis XVI: a crowned double coat of arms each in an oval in a wide border of fleurs-de-lis and tulip-like flowers the dexter arms of her husband that normally used by the Duc de Berry but also by the seconde maison Capétienne d'Artois azure 3 fleurs-de-lis or with a bordure embattled gules and the sinister arms of her father Louis XVI matching that of the Kings of France azure 3 fleurs-de-lis or with no bordure gold-tooled spine with the author and title in the 2nd and volume number in the 3rd of 5 fields and further with decorated rolls and fleurs-de-lis gold-tooled board edges and turn-ins pink silk endleaves headbands in white and pink gilt edges. Large 12mo 17.5 x 10.5 cm. With 3 title-pages each in the same border made of 4 rules with circular decorations mitred at the corners a large folding engraved map of France in 1816 by Hérisson on heavy paper 3 astronomical and cosmographical figures on 3 engraved plates a large folding hierarchical tableau synoptique of French grammar and numerous numerical tables and mathematical equations in the text. Set in roman and italic types each title-page with a few words in a French ronde upright script. 3 volumes. Very rare first and only edition of a compendious educational work intended for girls dedicated in the newly restored Bourbon monarchy to Marie Thérèse de France 1778-1851 Duchesse d'Angoulême and daughter of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette the only heir directly descended from Louis XVI to survive the Revolution. The dedication itself appears in volume 1 1817 but is noted on all three title-pages so also 1816. The present copy is in a beautiful armorial morocco binding clearly intended as a dedication copy for Marie Thérèse with her arms on both boards of each volume. She had married her first cousin Louis Antoine d'Artois 1775-1844 Duc d'Angoulême in 1799 he was to be King of France for 20 minutes in 1830 when his father and he abdicated then pretender to the throne calling himself Louis XIX. She was nearly forty and childless when the book appeared soon after the 1814/15 restoration of the Bourbon monarchy with her uncle as King Louis XVIII. Rather than impale the husband's and father's arms as the English did French ladies displayed them side by side: courtoisie. The book contains lessons in all subjects girls of good family should be taught. The first volume covers French grammar and syntax with separate courses for younger and older girls followed by a basic course in rhetoric. The second volume covers arithmetic and geography in single extensive courses. The third and last volume covers history and mythology again with separate courses for the younger and older girls both presented like a catechism. with questions and answers for the children to learn by heart. In fine condition with only a small tear in the folding table and occasional very minor foxing. We were unable to locate another copy of this book in OCLC RLIN COPAC KVK or even the Biblliothèque Nationale. This is an abridgement of the author's other work Cours pratique d'Education à l'usage des jeunes Demoiselles which was published in three volumes from 1816 to 1817. This larger work is also rare. We could locate copies only in the Bibliothèque Nationale and Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen Germany. Contemporary mottled sheep gilt spine with brown morocco label. Lacks the front free endpaper. . Twelvemo. Sixteen engraved plates of calligraphic models following p. 42 included in the pagination large engraved folding map preceding the geography section and nine plates showing principles of design not included in the pagination after the art section. Musical notation in the text within the music section. With the printed preliminary leaf stating that this is an authorized book and not a piracy signed by the author and the publisher. Small chip at head of spine twentieth-century ownership marks on front pastedown. A little light foxing. Overall a very good copy of a rare book. Little is known of the author who is credited with several books on education. His Principes élementaire de lecture d'ecriture de musique et de dessin 1817 was also published by Eymery. OCLC cites one copy of that book at the University of Delaware. We suspect it is also an abridgement of Cours pratique d'Education but it is smaller than our book. The calligraphy plates are by Alexandre Bourgoin who was a celebrated writing master and wrote several books on the subject. His birth and death dates are not listed in any of the souces we checked. Illustrated with 3 half-titles abundantly illustrated with ornaments and in-text vignettes as well as 14 plates by Andrew Best Leloir Levilly. Edition produced from the 1704 text corrected with a dissertation by Baron Silvestre de Sacy. The three frontispieces of the ordinary printing were not printed on vellum for technical or cost reasons. Bindings in contemporary half red shagreen signed A. Bertrand at the top of the first endpaper. Spine with Jansenist raised bands. A slight depression to the lower joint at the head of volume 1. Restoration to the lower joint at the head of volume 2. Occasional pale foxing. Armorial bookplate: Bibliothèque de Mouchy with shelf label. Antoine de Noailles 1841-1909 Duc de Mouchy château de Mouchy. One of the finest illustrated works of the Romantic period and of wood engraving both for its ornaments and for its prodigious invention in design. This edition contains added details on the customs and manners of the Eastern Nations. Bound in full calf. Bound in full contemporary calf. Externally joints tender to most weak to a couple boards with the front board detached but present to 'Vol II' with slight cracking to the spines minor loss to the head of the spine to vol 'iv' and rubbing to the extremities and joints. Spines decorated with a large gilt ornamental panel featuring an oriental dancer at its centre surrounded by multiple motifs inspired by the East. Large dark stain at the foot of volume two as well as a narrow split to the leather measuring approximately 8 cm. Foxing and browning throughout. From p. 70 of volume one onward a water stain affecting the lower margin similarly present throughout volume two. Pages 26 and 27 with a tear without loss. Corners rubbed. One of the finest illustrated books of the Romantic period and of wood engraving remarkable both for its ornamental richness and for the extraordinary inventiveness of its designs. Concernant l'ensemble des volumes : intérieur légèrement jauni, quelques rousseurs et marques marginales. Si Antoine Galland fut le premier à révéler les Mille et Une Nuits à l’Europe en 1704, sa traduction était avant tout littéraire : il adaptait les contes au goût de la cour de Versailles, en gommant les passages trop crus ou les répétitions poétiques pour en faire un objet de divertissement galant. Jean-Jacques Caussin de Perceval, professeur de langue arabe au Collège de France, intervient un siècle plus tard avec une ambition différente. Il ne se contente pas de rééditer Galland ; il complète la série. À l'époque, on savait que la version de Galland était incomplète par rapport aux manuscrits originaux. Caussin de Perceval a donc puisé dans les manuscrits de la Bibliothèque impériale pour traduire des contes inédits et donner à l'oeuvre une envergure nouvelle, plus fidèle à la structure foisonnante du recueil oriental. Edition originale de la traduction revue par Caussin de Perceval. "Edition la meilleure et la plus complète", Brunet (2, 361). Bon exemplaire, en assez bon état, dans une reliure typique 1er empire.

Notre exemplaire est imprimé sur vélin fort et comporte 17 gravures hors texte comme le signale Carteret et environ 1000 gravures (III-256), alors que le tirage courant comporte seulement 14 gravures hors texte. Reliure un peu frottée, restauration de la table des matières à la fin du tome III, charnière du tome I fragile et mouillure claire du même tome en partie inférieure en fin de volume, sans rousseurs. Exemplaire de 1er tirage, belle qualité des gravures. Malgré les défauts signalés, reste un bon exemplaire avec la particularité des 17 gravures signalées.
