The combined edition of the two works totaled five volumes three volumes published in 1865 and two more Nuttall in 1871. Lacking is volume three of the 1865 Michaux and volume 2 of the 1871 Nuttall. Together a complete set has 277 very fine hand-colored engraved plates. These 3 volumes are being sold as is. 145 plates of 162 are present in these three volumes. The color plates are quite beautiful and are protected by tissue. Stated in the preface to this edition: "The whole of the sheets of the last imprint were destroyed by a fire at the bindery wither they had been sent for collation; but fortunately the French copper-plates were in another building. This has enabled the new publishers to issue the work in a much improved style and has allowed for opportunity for additional notes and remarks." Michaux's volumes contain 156 hand colored plates all protected with tissue guards; and Nuttall's volumes contain 121 hand colored plates also protected with tissue guards. Nuttall's title: "The North American Sylva. and Nova Scotia not described in the work of F. Andrew Michaux and containing all the forest trees discovered in the Rocky Mountains the territory of Oregon down to the shores of the Pacific and into the confines of California as well as in various parts of the United States." Nameplate on the front pastedown of each volume for George Warren Hammond 1833-1908 the manager of various paper mills chemistry student specializing in paper manufacture and member of the Maine Legislature and Maine Board of Agriculture. A student of botany Mr. Hammond no doubt enjoyed the stunning portrayals of North American trees found in these volumes. Faint dampstaining and spotting to the preliminaries of Vol. I and front board of this volume reattached by a conservator. Japanese tissue repair to the top of the spine of Vol. III.
