A pristine untrimmed copy of the first book by the author of the "North American Sylva" in period mustard colored laid papered boards. <br /> <br /> Francois Michaux made an 1800-mile journey made through the Eastern United States following in the footsteps of his father Andre who was on the Baudin voyage to Australia in 1800. "Michaux began to seek an opportunity to continue his father's work in North America. he sailed for America and arrived at Charleston South Carolina on 9 October 1801. He had been instructed to close down the nursery founded by his father at Charleston for economic reasons and he sent back to France those seedlings he thought worthy of cultivation. In the spring of 1802 Michaux toured the forests of New Jersey with David Hosack and also visited Hosack's newly established Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. From there he made an extended visit to Philadelphia where he met William Bartram and saw William Hamilton's fine collection of trees at Woodlands. He then made a journey through Pennsylvania Kentucky and Tennessee before returning to Carolina and he met on the way many of his father's old acquaintances. He returned to France at the end of 1803 to organize the shipments of plants and seeds that he had sent back and to make a series of reports on his work. J. / Himely de la part de / l'auteur"; Himely was a Charleston watchmaker in ca. 179-1810 who purchased a garden in that city on Michaux's behalf in 1792. Virginia novelist Amelie Rives's copy with her small book label on the front pastedown and inscribed to her by one Thomas S. White at Beaufort S.C. in 1894 addressing her as "Amelie Rives Chanler". Rives 1863-1945 goddaughter of Robert E. Lee and granddaughter of Virginia Senator William Cabell Rives was born in Richmond but lived most of her life early and late at Castle Hill near Charlottesville; she published her first novel at 23 and produced a string of popular titles over the next 40 years. Rives was married to John Armstrong Chanler a descendant of John Jacob Astor 1888-1895 and married Russian Prince Pierre Troubetzkoy the year after her divorce. Sabin 48703. Howes M-579. The map is noteworthy for locating the proposed states of "Franklinia" and "Morgania" to the east and west of Tennessee respectively and for showing the routes of a number of western roads. This edition is heavily abridged. Michaux was commissioned by the French government in 1801 to sell his father's tree plantations in Charleston. His journey lasted from August 1801 until March 1803 during which time he travelled extensively throughout the eastern central and southern U.S. Among his stops were Lexington and the horse farms of Kentucky; Nashville and Jonesborough Tennessee; Morganton North Carolina; and Chester Columbia and finally Charleston South Carolina. He comments heavily on the flora and fauna of Georgia and the Carolinas as well as on the health of the cotton and tobacco trades. A highly interesting account of a journey during which the author compiled much information for his later work The North American Sylva. "Few American color plate books had such lasting popularity as this classic work on American trees or as tangled a publication history . Thomas Nuttall travelled extensively in the South Midwest and West between 1815 and 1835. One of his goals was to gather materials to supplement Michaux's work. His work on American trees not covered in Michaux was first issued in 1842-1849 . In 1856 a fire destroyed the premises of the publishers of the joint edition. The Michaux copper plates were saved but the Nuttal stones were evidently lost and the later joint editions as here used new stones" Reese.
