Edizione originale inglese. Thomson n. 96, p.68 Kate Greenaway (London, 1846- Hampstead, 1901). Figlia d’arte (suo padre era il noto incisore J. Greenaway), cresciuta in un ambiente sereno ha precocemente fatto notare il suo talento e già all’età di 17 anni riceve i primi riconoscimenti. Frequenta la Heatherley’s School of Art e la Slade School of Fine Art. A partire dal 1877 fin al 1895 realizza una serie di illustrazioni a colori incise da Evans per le edizioni Routledge. I suoi disegni sono intensi sempre ricchi di fantasia e dolcezza, i suoi bambini dai tratti e dai colori sempre delicati accompagnano semplici storie di ordinaria quotidianità ma molto piacevoli, sempre contrassegnate da quella serenità che Lei stessa aveva vissuto nella sua infanzia. K. G. riesce nei suoi disegni a rievocare uno stile di vita idilliaco ma nello stesso tempo ci ha fornito interessanti dati su come vivevano i bambini nell’epoca vittoriana. La sua arte raffinata, qualificabile come proto - Art Nouveau, ha influenzato molti illustratori, da Beardsley a Boutet de Monvel, a Willebeek le Mair. Il suo famoso Under the Window fu pubblicato molte volte da editori diversi, non solo in Gran Bretagna ma anche in Francia e Germania superando i centomila esemplari di tiratura. Appassionata anche di moda per bambini ha creato una linea di vestiti in stile vittoriano. In Gran Bretagna ogni anno a partire dal 1955 una medaglia che porta il suo nome viene assegnata al miglior lavoro di illustrazione per bambini, e a conferma della severità dei requisiti per ottenere il premio alcuni anni sono privi di vincitori in quanto nessun libro ha soddifatto le esigenze del concorso.
