Einband leicht berieben, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand - Die Briefe und Tagebücher von Oskar Schlemmer umfassen einen Zeitraum von dreiunddreißig Jahren, von 1910 bis 1943. Das Fazit eines ganzen Lebens ist darin beschlossen. Der Beginn liegt noch vor den Toren des Ersten Weltkrieges, inmitten eines verheißungsvollen Aufbruchs künstlerischen Geschehens, und es endet während des letzten Krieges. Die Texte wurden aus einem weit den Umfang dieses Buches überschreitenden Material ausgewählt, bestehend aus Briefen, den Tagebüchern, aus Manuskripten, Arbeitsheften und den darin eingefügten Aufzeichnungen. Der größte Teil der hier publizierten Briefe ist einem vollständig erhaltenen Schriftwechsel mit dem Malerfreund Otto Meyer-Amden entnommen. Die intensive Auseinandersetzung Oskar Schlemmers mit der Kunst und mit den Künstlern seinerzeit ist von tiefem Ernst geprägt. Das Ideal-früh schon aufgerichtetstand wie ein Leitstern über seinem Leben, im Licht und im Dunkel, auf der Suche und in der Irre. Immer war es sein Bemühen, diesem Ideal zu folgen, und nie war er zufrieden mit dem wirklich Erreichten. Sicherlich war er sich von allem Anfang an bewußt, daß sein Weg ein steiniger, einsamer und schmaler sein würde, weit entfernt von den Annehmlichkeiten einer erfolgssicheren Kunststraße, die verführerisch vor ihm lag. In seinen Bildern hat er ei ne einfache, klare Welt aufgebaut, wie sie seinem ausgeprägten Gefühl für Gesetz, Zahl und Ordnung entsprach. Zu seinem Lebensthema wurde "Der Mensch im Raum". Daneben finden sich engagierte politische Analysen wie etwa die vernichtende Abrechnung mit der Appeasement-Politik der westlichen Demokratien oder dem Kommunismus Stalinscher Prägung; Betrachtungen zu Büchern und Autoren, Schilderung von Land und Leuten, bissig manchmal, oft voll scharfsinnigen Humors und wohlgezielter Pointen: Vieles ist bester Tucholsky. Die Briefe gingen nach Zürich - als Absenderort auf T.s späten Briefen längst bekannt. It is as vehicles of persuasion that Dr Carey and Dr Reid seek primarily to treat the speeches, using their commentary to shed light on how well the speeches perform their function. The speeches have also been chosen for their value as documents of Athenian law, commerce and private life. The commentary explains as far as possible any obscurities in these fields and also deals with matters of linguistic interest. While intended mainly for undergraduates and students in the upper forms of schools, the book will be of interest to all classical scholars. The introduction, which provides a brief survey of the Athenian legal system and the trade of the speechwriter, requires no knowledge of Greek and should interest students of classical culture and literature in translation.
