Somewhat worn contemporary red half calf gilt spine and marbled paper boards top edge trimmed othewise uncut. First edition it was reprinted in 1804 and in 1816. It contains also an analyse of Ovid’s Metamorphosis. Nicolas-Jean Hugou de Bassville 1743-93 was a French diplomat and revolutionary. In 1792 he was sent to Naples and afterwards to Rome where he worked for the revolutionary ideas. He proclaimed himself protector of the radical Jacobins in Rome and demanded the expulsion of the French émigrés who had taken refuge there. His behavior angered the conservative party in Rome and he was accused of insulting the pope and in January 1793 when he was driving with his family to the Via del Corso he was dragged from his carriage and lynched to death. hardcover
