Blank leaf following front free endpaper bears inscription dated 30 Fructidor an treize 16 Sept. 1805 indicating that this was a prize book awarded to Louis Cornelissen a student at Ecole de Medecine a' Gand Departement de l'Escaut by Professor of Chemistry P. Beyts. A translation into French by Madame Lavoisier of Richard Kirwan's Essay on Phlogiston and the Constitution of Acids. Kirwan defended the theory of phlogiston a now disproved scientific theory that had posited the existence of an element called "phlogiston" which was released during combustion. In Very Good Condition: edges rubbed in particular front joint; front board scraped; slight loss of leather at ends of spine; light foxing on first and last leaves; otherwise clean and bright. Spengler Was A Jesuit Priest And His Volume Was Published In Augsburg The Home Town Of Jesuit-Educated Leopold Mozart. The Book First Appeared In 1772 And Then Went Through Six Reprinting Before Being Revised And Expanded In 1800. Mozart Owned A Copy Of The Third Edition 1779 Possibly Acquiring It When He Passed Through Augsburg The Home Of His Cousin Basle In January 1779 Or More Likely Later When Living In Salzburg Or Vienna. Mozart Held On To The Volume Until He Died. Front fixed endpapers bear engraved armorial book plate of George Paget with the Paget family motto "Per il suo Contrario." This was presumably Lord George Augustus Frederick Paget 1818-1880 who served in the Crimean War as a senior officer of the Light Cavalry brigade under Lord Cardigan and was present at the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade; he was later made Inspector General of Cavalry. In Good Condition: edges and boards are somewhat rubbed; leather corners are scraped with most of leather lacking from upper corners of vol. 1; part of leather spine label lacking from vol. 3; pages are clean and tight. An attractive if incomplete set of this romantic retelling of Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba 1453-1515 and the conquest of Granada by French writer Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian 1755-1794. The author Pierre Collet 1693-1770 wrote this biography following the beatification in 1729 and canonization in 1737 of St. Vincent de Paul 1581-1660. It was first published anonymously in 1748; in this somewhat abridged version it became very popular. Condition is GOOD ; covers clean with wear to corners and spine ends. Vols 3 and 4 have some starting to front hinge both are holding fine vol. 1 has a little just at the top. Corners worn vols 13 and 4 have a bit of loss to spine head. All bindings very solid. Vol. 1 has some faded gray stains to the text throughout all are quite readable.
