2003014617London: Kluwer Academic Publishers 2003. Cloth/Laminated Boards. Very Good/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book A revival of interest in morphology has occurred during recent years. "The Yearbook of Morphology" series published since 1988 has proven to be an eminent support for this upswing of morphological research since it contains articles on topics which are central in the current theoretical debates which are frequently referred to. In the "Yearbook of Morphology 2002" a number of articles is devoted to the morphology of a variety of pidgin and creole languages which appear to have much more morphology than traditionally assumed. A second topic of this volume is the morphological use of truncation for the coinage of proper names in Germanic and Romance languages in particular endearment forms with highly interesting consequences for the theory of phonology-morphology interaction. Thirdly this volume contains articles on how affixes are combined and ordered in complex words and the complex linguistic principles behind these orderings. 324pp.N.B.Base of spine slightly marked. Type: Book The Yearbook of Morphology series published since 1988 has proven to be an eminent support for an upswing of morphological research since it contains articles on topics which are central in the theoretical debates which are frequently referred to. "The Yearbook of Morphology 1999" focuses on diachronic morphology and shows in a number of articles by specialists how complicated morphological systems develop in the course of time. In addition this volume deals with a number of hotly debated issues in theoretical morphology: its interaction with phonology including Optimality Theory the relation between inflection and word formation and the formal modelling of inflectional systems. A feature of this volume is an article on morphology in sign language a new area of research in linguistics. The relevant evidence comes from a wide variety of languages amongst which Germanic Romance and Slavic languages are prominent. 319pp. Kluwer Academic Publishers hardcover

5415LETTERS: 30 September 1977 and 3 July 1979 both on letterhead of Yale University Department of Classics; OFFPRINT from 'Harvard Studies in Classical Philology': Cambridge Massachusetts: Harvard University Press 1963. Both letters two pages quarto. LETTER ONE annotated in ink with some ink marks in the blank space beneath Goold's signature: Written at the point at which Goold was relinquishing the University College Latin Chair to return to Yale. 'I told you I should be visiting Yale this autumn; and now I have to tell you that I shall be going on to Stanford after Christmas till March. Still if I shan't have the pleasure of coming in occassionally to the bookshop it probably means that I shall be ordering more books from you!' Orders a couple of copies of Austin's 'Aeneid'. 'To my great delight classics are thriving at Yale as also at Harvard where I went to a party a week or so ago; I don't know whether this reflects a national trend quite likely not but I'm glad to be at a place where there are so many people taking classics courses that one hasn't to worry about being sacked because of the dearth of students.' Discusses his wife's job 'we see each other only at weekends' and 'the Marshalls' 'they very kindly met us at Boston airport & contributed much to our being able to settle down so well'. 'The printers of the Loeb Classical Library of which Goold was Chief Editor continue to make the most appalling mistakes. They bound the whole of my Manilius before discovering that they had printed ASTRONMICA rather than - NOMICA on the spine! The result is that the spine will now have a costly cover-up job done on it and another two months' delay. Absolutely infuriating. I can I suppose comfort myself with the thought that this is likely to be the best £3.90 worth in Latin studies - but I've shed as much of my blood on thhe book as I care.' Asks if Blackwell's want to stock his edition of Horace's odes. LETTER TWO with negligible coffee stain: Is sorry to learn that Quinton has 'been put on half-time'. 'But I gather reading between the lines that Blackwell's is not devoid of humanity and that some special i.e. better arrangement may be possible. And it may be congenial for you to work on second-hand books exclusively'. Speculates that there are enough copies of out of print classics books 'to enable one English bookseller to do a good trade'. Places an order for three works. 'I need hardly say that I look forward to a continuation of our personal contact & promise my undiminished interest in whatever you can come up with in the second-hand book line. Discusses the complicated publishing plans for the Harvard Servius. 'I don't expect any difficulty although I anticipate being pressured into cutting back on typographical excellence.' 'I get the impression that Britain's new government is proving more popular & successful than most thought possible. Contrariwise the oil crisis has hit America hard: the other day I had to wait 2 hours in a nearly mile-long queue of cars to get my tank filled'. Discusses car dependency and the cutting out of wasteful consumption. THE OFFPRINT is of eighteen pages octavo stapled into original grey printed wraps. Very good with a trace of rust to the staples. Front wrap inscribed to 'P. Q. with best wishes from G. P. G.' The editors express their intentions: "While retaining many of the instigations of the original Editorial and Advisory Boards the present Editors find it necessary to explore new critical paths and modes of inquiry: tradition must be seen as transcendence rather than the norm. The most varied contributions are analogically related so as to generate the interanimation of philology and philosophy rhetorics and hermeneutics. This tactic is not one of antithesis but of oxymoron. From the non-place of our activity the quest for definition is no more no less urgent than its denial but we do not confuse the courageous exercise of imagination with irresponsible evasiveness and delusions of self-expression." Dustjacket has minor edgewear with 1 tiny tear.; 1.26 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 352 pages; With an examination into Xenophon's longer historical works the "Hellenica" and the "Anabasis" Dillery considers how far these texts reflect the Greek intellectual world of the fourth and fifth centuries B. C. rather than focusing on the traditional question of how accurate they are as histories. Through the analysis of the complete corpus of Xenophon's work and the writings of his contemporaries Xenophon is shown to be very much a man of his times concerned with topical issues ranging from panhellenism and utopia to how far the gods controlled human history. . 041509139X . 199718682Harvard University Press. 1997. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Faint foxing to textblock. Else minor shelfwear.; Written Voices Spoken Signs is a stimulating introduction to new perspectives on Homer and other traditional epics. Taking advantage of recent research on language and social exchange the nine essays in this volume focus on performance and audience reception of oral poetry. These innovative essays by leading scholars of Homer oral poetics and epic invite us to rethink some key concepts for an understanding of traditional epic poetry. Egbert Bakker examines the epic performer's use of time and tense in recounting a past that is alive. Tackling the question of full-length performance of the monumental Iliad Andrew Ford considers the extent to which the work was perceived as a coherent whole in the archaic age. John Miles Foley addresses questions about spoken signs and the process of reference in epic discourse and Ahuvia Kahane studies rhythm as a semantic factor in the Homeric performance. Richard Martin suggests a new range of performance functions for the Homeric simile. And Gregory Nagy establishes the importance of one feature of epic language the ellipsis. These six essays centered on Homer engage with fundamental issues that are addressed by three essays primarily concerned with medieval epic: those by Franz Bäuml on the concept of fact; by Wulf Oesterreicher on types of orality; and by Ursula Schaefer on written and spoken media. In their Introduction the editors highlight the underlying approach and viewpoints of this collaborative volume.; Center for Hellenic Studies Colloquia; 320 pages . 0674962605 .
