Some edgewear to wraps.; These twenty-five papers form the proceedings of a conference held at the Foundation Anastasios G Leventis in Nicosia Cyprus in 2002 which reflected the current revival of interest in Herodotus. As Vassos Karageorghis explains in his eloquent if brief introduction we need Herodotus as `a social anthropologist a philosopher/companion' to help us to reassess the Greek world `with impartial serenity with wisdom and good humour'. These well-presented essays focus on Herodotus presentation of Greeks and barbarians across the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean and discuss how this throws light on ancient Greek attitudes to themselves to other cultures to religion to politics and to war. The papers are wide-ranging and cover Herodotus' treatment of Cyprus Amathus Athens the Phoenicians and Scythia his principles and attitudes towards violence his realisation of the sacred landscape his rhetoric of slavery his strategies and use of lies and his accounts of war.; 423 pages . 9963560571 . 20052029D. S. Brewer. 2005. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. A small puncture mark at the lower back joint. Ex-library copy with usual stamps and pocket though I believe this was never in circulation.; The Library of Medieval Women; 0.94 x 8.43 x 5.59 Inches; 199 pages; Christine de Pizan also seen as de Pisan 1364–1430 was a writer and analyst of the medieval era who strongly challenged the clerical misogyny and stereotypes that were prevalent in the male-dominated realm of the arts. De Pizan completed forty-one pieces during her thirty-year career 1399–1429. She earned her accolade as Europe’s first professional woman writer Redfern 74. Her success stems from a wide range of innovative writing and rhetorical techniques that critically challenged renowned male writers such as Jean de Meun who to Pizan’s dismay incorporated misogynist beliefs within their literary works. In recent decades de Pizan's work has been returned to prominence by the efforts of scholars such as Charity Cannon Willard and Earl Jeffrey Richards. Certain scholars have argued that she should be seen as an early feminist who efficiently used language to convey that women could play an important role within society although this characterisation has been challenged by other critics who claim either that it is an anachronistic use of the word or that her beliefs were not progressive enough to merit such a designation Richards 1-2. . 1843840588 . 199438856Princeton University Press. 1994. Hardcover. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Light shelfwear to book and DJ.; 280 pages; Covering material as diverse as curse tablets coins tattoos and legal decrees Deborah Steiner explores the reception of writing in archaic and classical Greece. She moves beyond questions concerning ancient literacy and the origins of the Greek alphabet to examine representations of writing in the myths and imaginative literature of the period. Maintaining that the Greek alphabet was not seen purely as a means of transcribing and preserving the spoken word the author investigates parallels between writing and other signifiers such as omens tokens and talismans; the role of inscription in religious rites including cursing oath-taking and dedication; and perceptions of how writing functioned both in autocracies and democracies. Particularly innovative is the suggestion that fifth-century Greek historians and dramatists portrayed writing as an essential tool of tyrants who not only issue written decrees but also "inscribe" human bodies with brands and cut up land with compasses and rules. The despotic overtones associated with writing inform discussion of its function in democracies. Although writing could promote equal justice ancient sources also linked this activity with historical and mythical figures who opposed the populist regime. By examining this highly nuanced portrayal of writing Steiner offers a new perspective on ancient views of written law and its role in 5th-century Athenian democracy. . 0691032386 .
