20002877D. S. Brewer. 2000. Hardcover. Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. 'Write-off' has been stamped to top of textblock. Book appears unread. Very light shelfwear.; 0.63 x 9.21 x 6.14 Inches; 264 pages; This is an entirely new and original reading of 'Pearl' placing the anonymous masterpiece in the context of the Cheshire coterie that flourished at the court of Richard II during the 1390s. The brilliance of its poetic construction has long been acknowledged but here 'Pearl' is also shown to engage with the social religious and political events of the late fourteenth century. The poem's defense of infant baptism is seen as countering Lollard criticism of the sacraments its retelling of the Parable of the Vineyard as offering scriptural support to the aims of the Statute of Labourers. The poem's dazzling representation of aristocratic magnificence - jewelled crowns gem-embroidered gowns livery badges civic processions and monumental architecture - studied in this context relates to the spectacular royal culture of one of England's most ambitious monarchs. The courtly elegy offered consolation after the death of Anne of Bohemia while its vision of a royal child-bride figured in the intense national debate over the king's prospective marriage to the six-year-old Isabelle of France. Richard II's fall from power brought to an end not simply Cheshire privilege but also a poetic tradition that produced some of the finest works of English literature most notably 'Pearl' and 'Gawain and the Green Knight'. . 0859915999 . 199826353Princeton University Press. 1998. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. From the library of R. E. Fantham. Pen notes to 1 pages. A few pages with pencil and underlining. Light rubbing and faint soiling to DJ.; This is the first book to describe the intimate relationship between Latin literature and the politics of ancient Rome. Until now most scholars have viewed classical Latin literature as a product of aesthetic concerns. Thomas Habinek shows however that literature was also a cultural practice that emerged from and intervened in the political and social struggles at the heart of the Roman world. Habinek considers major works by such authors as Cato Cicero Horace Ovid and Seneca. He shows that from its beginnings in the late third century b. C. To its eclipse by Christian literature six hundred years later classical literature served the evolving interests of Roman and more particularly aristocratic power. It fostered a prestige dialect for example; it appropriated the cultural resources of dominated and colonized communities; and it helped to defuse potentially explosive challenges to prevailing values and authority. Literature also drew upon and enhanced other forms of social authority such as patriarchy religious ritual cultural identity and the aristocratic procedure of self-scrutiny or existimatio. Habinek's analysis of the relationship between language and power in classical Rome breaks from the long Romantic tradition of viewing Roman authors as world-weary figures aloof from mundane political concerns--a view he shows that usually reflects how scholars have seen themselves. The Politics of Latin Literature will stimulate new interest in the historical context of Latin literature and help to integrate classical studies into ongoing debates about the sociology of writing.; 248 pages . 0691068275 . 2000793University of California Press. 2000. Hardcover. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Light shelfwear to DJ.; Between 279 and 229 B. C. the Aitolian koinon a federation of mountain cantons in west central Greece expanded to incorporate many of the neighboring lands and peoples lying between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This new political configuration contributed to the development of modern systems of federal democracy based on proportional representation. Despite these institutional advances the Aitolians and their polity are reviled in the ancient historical tradition which views them as backward semi-barbarous brigands. The Politics of Plunder is the first English-language book in over a century to examine the political history of the Aitolian koinon in its era of expansion. Joseph Scholten presents a chronological reconstruction of the koinon's course of expansion synthesizing a number of recent studies covering Aitolian topography epigraphy and institutional development that help to compensate for deficiencies in the ancient narrative record. His study is the first to ask how a people and a polity so detested by their contemporaries succeeded in making such fundamental contributions to their regional political culture. Scholten's careful investigation charts a middle course that neither whitewashes the Aitolians nor credulously accepts the biased ancient tradition. This balanced approach provides a much-needed fresh perspective on the Aitolians and their koinon. Discussing the history of the ancient Aegean Greek world and the political economic and social history of the Hellenistic Era this book will interest anyone concerned with those subjects or fascinated by the development of ancient Greek political institutions and theories particularly federalism.; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 2.72 x 9.31 x 7.94 Inches; 339 pages . 0520201876 .
