Two roughly contemporary histories of William the Conqueror in French. William a monk of Jumiège retold the earlier history of Normandy written by Dudo then appended a history of his own times beginning with the accession of Duke Richard III followed by his brother Robert father of the Conqueror. He carried the narrative on to King Henry I of England son of the Conqueror although there are doubts about the authorship of later parts of this history. William of Poitiers served as the Conqueror's chaplain. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica 11th Ed. 1911 the extant portion of Poitiers' chronicle "is valuable for details of the Conqueror's life although untrustworthy with regard to affairs in England. It was written between 1071 and 1077 and was used by Orderic Vitalus." Shipping weight 2 lbs. International 1 lb. 12 oz. . G/No dj. 21 X 13 cm. J.-L.-J.-Brière, Libraire Hardcover

Rigord's Gesta Philippi Augusti presents the French view of the third crusade a view unfavorable to King Richard I of England; this is abridged and continued by William the Breton. French sources on Louis VIII son of Philippe-Auguste are sparse which is why Guizot has selected the brief anonymous life and the poem of Nicolas de Bray. Before his accession Louis led the expedition to aid English barons revolting against King John. He reigned only three years dying of dysentery during his return to Paris after conquering much of the south of France in the crusade against the Albigensian heretics. All translated into French. Jacques de Vitry Jacobus de Vitriaco having taken part in the fifth crusade 1218-1222 wrote the historical portions of Book I his Historia Orientalis sometimes called Historia Hierosolytima based on earlier manuscripts and documents but also included a traveller's view of the country its people & customs based on personal observation. Guizot includes those portions of Book II which deal with the state & mores of the West while omitting those dealing solely with specific religious orders and with theological controversy. Book III describes events that Jacques himself witnessed or was involved in and while many editors doubt its authenticity it matches in many particulars a letter he wrote to friends upon the taking of Damiette.
