"The Hoosier Schoolmaster: A Story of Backwoods Life in Indiana is an 1871 novel by the American author Edward Eggleston. The novel originated from a series of stories written for Hearth and Home, a periodical edited by Eggleston, and was based on the experiences of his brother, George Cary Eggleston, who had been a schoolteacher in Indiana. The novel is noted for its realistic depictions of 19th-century American rural life and for its use of local dialect."

The memories of the old men and women of the village, born perhaps between 1880 and 1895, supplement and humanise the documentary evidence of the historian and the material evidence of the archaeologist. 26 chapters over 4 sections: Craftsmen, Agriculture, The Village, Migrant Workers. 29 illustrations. Finley Peter Dunne (1867-1936) was an American humorist and writer from Chicago. His fictional 'Mr. Dooley' expounded upon political and social issues of the day from his South Side Chicago Irish pub and he spoke with the thick verbiage and accent of an Irish immigrant from County Roscommon. Dunne's sly humor and political acumen won the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was a frequent target of Mr. Dooley's barbs. Indeed Dunne's sketches became so popular and such a litmus test of public opinion that they were read each week at cabinet meetings in Roosevelt's White House. HUMOR 3
