147 p. + Excellent illustrated publisher's advertisements (12 p.). With Sixty-five Illustrations by "Boz" (M. J. Sweeney). Some age stain. Rear hinge cracked. 8vo. Gilt decorated publisher's cloth, modestly worn. Full of "Dutch" humor in pidgin dialect poems and satirical illustrations. Charles Follen Adams was born in Dorchester in 1842. He entered into mercantile pursuits at the age of 15. At twenty-two he enlisted in the 13th Massachusetts infantry; and was in all the battles in which his regiment participated. Wounded at Gettysburg, he was taken prisoner; released, and detailed for hospital duty. Since 1872 he was best known as a writer of German dialect poems, chiefly humorous. The first that appeared was "The Puzzled Dutchman" in " Our Young Folks". This was followed by various others of which "Leedle Yaw-cob Strauss" became immediately a favorite. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! 380 p. Curiously illustrated by the author in a naive style. Worn original full cloth binding. Lacks endpapers. Large 8vo. 23 cm. A remarkable self-published epic free verse poem that covers a vast landscape of late Victorian-American social and cultural issues and situations. Included is a chapter in black dialect. The heroine of the work is "Millie Floss." Though not a brilliant copy, the book is genuinely scarce. Bascom was a Prohibition Party politician in Steuben County, New York. Probably there is much of local interest in this book. Quite remarkable. W145
