The War of Devolution 16671668 saw Louis XIV's French armies overrun the Hapsburg controlled Spanish Netherlands. Louis's claims to the Spanish Netherlands were tenuous. His wife Maria Theresa the daughter of Philip IV had renounced her rights of a Spanish inheritance in return for a large dowry at the time of her marriage. The dowry had yet to be paid however. When Philip died in 1665 Louis' lawyers justified Louis's possible claims by arguing that while Spanish laws of succession meant the throne of Philip IV would pass to his son Charles II ancient laws of Duchy of Brabant ruled that the Spanish Netherlands could "devolve" to Philip's daughter from his first marriage Louis's wife. France pressed the claim in 1667 and the present work was a kind of war announcement. The Latin edition was published the same year as the French one. unknown

Rare 17th-century Spanish pamphlet documenting the maritime activities of the Royal Armada of Dunkirk and privateers along the coasts of France England and other territories from 1 May to 31 December 1638. This detailed account lists 118 captured vessels including warships frigates and small craft many laden with highly valuable cargoes such as silk spices wine sugar salt precious metals and pearls.Printed in Madrid it served both as a record of naval prizes and a public announcement of military success during the turbulent years of the Eighty Years War 1568-1648 and concurrent Franco-Spanish conflicts. Dunkirk then a major Spanish port in the Low Countries was a base for state-authorised privateers corsarios whose daring raids on enemy shipping are vividly detailed here including the disposition of artillery captured crews and the fate of vessels either incorporated into the Spanish fleet or destroyed.The present work emphasizes the skill and bravery of the Dunkirkers noting that despite repeated attempts by Dutch fleets to block them only one Spanish warship was lost over thirty months of operations while over 800 enemy ships were captured. It is an exceptional example of early modern naval reporting illustrating not only the logistics and spoils of naval warfare but also the political and economic role of privateering in Spanish maritime strategy.The leaves are slightly browned and foxed the gutter of the second leaf has been reinforced with a manuscript page number "124" and "125" at the recto of the first leaf and the verso of the last leaf. The first comprehensive compilation of the laws of the Spanish Indies. Antonio RodrÃÂguez de León Pinello compiled it by 1635 but it circulated only in manuscript until Fernando Jiménez de Paniagua brought it up to date and saw the work through the press in 1681. Prior to the publication of this massive work it was common practice for lawyers and courts in the various legal districts of the New World i.e. audiencias to compile in manuscript the laws in force in order that they might be used as precedents. Upon publication of this code the number of precedents did not decrease but increased: the courts continued to accept the cases and laws in the old local manuscript compilations as well as those on point and laws contained in the Recopilación. Covers with slight wear and scuffing at extremities. Faint dampstain in lower margin. Occasional contemporary manuscript notes and marks. Overall internally clean. Very good. A comprehensive list of rules addressed to ship captains governing the proper provisioning of Spanish vessels based in Sicily and Naples both then under Spanish rule. The text includes a bevy of rules expense guidelines and more and offers a fine window into the near-obsessive attention to detail that marked the administration of the Spanish military at the peak of its powers. <br> <br> Of particular interest are several pen and ink sketches that include tools a ship in dry dock and storage bins as well as two much larger harbor plans of Palermo and Naples. Each drawing is keyed to a printed description of the location and shows fortifications lookouts and in the case of Naples dormitories. These are charming and well accomplished. <br> <br> Good evidence of the Spanish navy at work at the height of empire with rules which certainly applied to vessels in the Americas as well.
