Three volumes. Engraved frontis and other engraved plates, two of them folding. Inconsequential marginal worming in one volume. 16mo. Worn leather backed boards binding. Spines should be replaced. XLib. [French Art Alliance, New York]. An important satire which parodies the assembly of the Etats Generaux held in 1593 (with the object of electing a Catholic King). It expresses the views in favor of the claims of Henri IV while opposing the Ligue [Spanish League and its supporters]. The satires greatly influenced the outcome of the assembly, and Henry IV was elected. The work is divided into three parts. It begins with a burlesque description of the opening procession of the assembly and this is followed in the second part by a catalogue of the chief Ligueurs and imaginary speeches by real persons. Finally, there are miscellaneous satires and epigrams. Written at the moment of the defeat of the Ligue, it was an immediate 'best-seller'. Authorship is usually ascribed to Jean Leroy, a canon of Rouen, with the collaboration of Jean Passerat, Pierre Pithou, Nicolas Rapim and others. This is the standard eighteenth century edition. The title of the lampoon derives from Saturae Menippeae, lost work of Varro based on satires by the Greek cynic Menippus. Brunet V-145; Cohen-De Rici 939. FR2
