Eighth edition revised & expanded of this compact handbook revised and developed the year the Republic of China established the Commission on the Unification of Pronunciation in order to develop a national phonetic system and language for China. Okamoto’s handbooks were marketed to business people in Japan and focused on the steamship passengers passing from and through Japan to Hong Kong Shanghai Canton & Beijing from the West Coast of the United States as well as British Empire subjects.
