Harkavy was born in Novogrudok, Belorussia. He studied at Lithuanian yeshivot and at the universities of St. Petersburg, Berlin, and Paris. On his return to Russia in 1870 he began teaching ancient Oriental history. The opposition in certain circles to the appointment of a Jew to a university lectureship prompted the Russian government to cancel his post, and he was transferred to the department of Jewish literature and Oriental manuscripts at the Imperial Library in St. Petersburg. In 1877 he was made head of that department, remaining in that position for the rest of his life. (Poliak in EJ, 2007) . From the library of Mayer Sulzberger, with his bookplate. Sulzberger was an American jurist and communal leader; first president of the American Jewish Committee, a founder of the J. P. S. , and officer of many Jewish institutions of higher learning. RARE collection of 55 papers in Hebrew and West Semitic epigraphy by Frank Moore Cross, Jr. (1921-2012), the Hancock Professor of Hebrew and Other Oriental Languages Emeritus at Harvard University, notable for his work in the interpretation of the Dead Sea Scrolls, his 1973 magnum opus 'Canaanite Myth and Hebrew Epic', and his work in Northwest Semitic epigraphy. Many of his essays on the latter topic have since been collected in 'Leaves from an Epigrapher's Notebook', revised especially for this book. The papers are divided into five sections: Palaeography, Transjordanian Epigraphy, Hebrew Inscriptions, Aramaic Texts, Old Canaanite and Phoenician Inscriptions. The author - Wilhelm Bacher (1850-1913) was an influential Jewish Hungarian scholar, rabbi, Orientalist and linguist.
