A scarce pamphlet on Greek prepositions and the cases they take primarily the work of the talented Richmond schoolmaster James Tate 1771-1843 - this copy presented by him with two autograph corrections. The centrepiece is a talk by Professor of Greek at Glasgow James Moor 1712-1779 originally printed by the Foulis Press in 1766; Tate adds a response and a preceding paper on the origin of cases each reprinted from periodicals. Autograph ownership of: Henry Kurtz 1796-1874 a German immigrant to the United States. In 1828 Kurtz was baptized a Brethren and two years later was called to the ministry. By the early 1830's he had secured a printing press and begun publishing German periodicals. Kurtz's desire to unify the increasingly scattered Brethren led to his launching in 1851 a paper to serve the church - The Gospel Visitor. Through his publishing activities he became one of the most influential figure of the Brethren church. Also with the autograph ownership of Henry Miller. A Welsh Grenadier Guards officer and celebrated author Gronow was additionally noted for an impeccable dress sense and overall popularity within society as well as his keen skill in marksmanship. This set is illustrated throughout with thirty-three hand-coloured plates collated complete. Rebound in cloth binding with paper-covered boards. Externally very smart indeed there is only some very minor marking to one board. Internally the binding is slightly tender in places and the pages are bright and clean throughout aside from the odd mark. Contains a small bookplate to each pastedown. Near Fine John C. The leather is bright and profusely decorated in gilt. The boards are a little rubbed and have moderate marking to them. An attractive set. Armourial bookplates to the inside board of each volume. Volume two has splitting to the front hinge with some loss of end paper surface but still holding well. Both volumes have light to moderate foxing to them. A "biographical sketch" of Rowlandson is followed by a detailed chronological study of his caricatures. There is a useful "chronological summary of subjects social and political caricatures engraved by or after Thomas Rowlandson" An essential addition to any Rowlandson collection. xv 378. xi 454 pp. 290 by 230mm 11½ by 9 inches. . The contents comprising 20 finely hand-coloured engraved plates on thick paper depicting various regional costumes with printed titles above and beneath with blank protective leaf between each plate. The plates irregularly numbered as they were originally issued as part of the 'Modes Parisiennes' periodical. A very good copy the binding firm with a 2cm tear to the head of the lower cover creasing to the corners and a little chipping to the spine ends and corners. The contents with the occasional minor finger-mark to the edges of the blank margins are otherwise in very good order the plates remaining clean and vivid. A selection of beautifully hand-coloured engravings illustrating regional costumes of Algeria Spain Italy Portugal Greece and Eastern Europe issued by the French fashion periodical 'Modes Parisiennes'.
