New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. 192 p. Color and b/w ills. "Metropolis is a city of the Mother Goddess in Ionia. The classical city of Metropolis is situated 45 km from Izmir and the Aegean coast overlooking the Torbali plain alongside the Izmir - Aydin motorway. In classical times the communication route was the Cayster River (Kucuk Menderes) and Metropolis lay at the mid point between Smyrna and Ephesus. Lying beneath the classical city are Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements - and above the classical city is a Byzantine settlement and fort, also used during the Ottoman period. Metropolis lived its golden era during the Late Hellenistic Period. Altars were erected in honour of Emperor Augustus during Roman Imperial Period. It became a bishopric in the Age of Byzantine Empire. Its people governed the city from its acropolis, worshipped gods, wandered and shopped in its stoa, decided on city in bouleuterion, enjoyed plays in its theatre. Now archaeologists are excavating where Metropolis once built, tracking past civilizations authoring the story of humanity reaching our days from centuries ago. The site has been excavated for the past 18 years by the Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir under the guidance of Professor Recep Meric. From 2007 Dr Serdar Aybek from The University of Trakya has taken over leadership of the excavation.".

New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 79, [1] p. A new discourse, dialogue and democracy against discrimination ASULIS. Translated by Liz Erçelik Amado, Irazca Geray. Founded under the Hrant Dink Foundation, ASULIS Discourse, Dialogue, Democracy Laboratory has been designed as an interdisciplinary space to engage from experimental studies and research in the field of discourse studies to conduct discussions on methods to combat discrimination as well as discriminatory discourse and its consequences. The word asulis, which is composed of the combination of the verbs asel (to say) and lsel (to listen) in Armenian and commonly used as conversation and chat was chosen as the name of the laboratory. ASULIS represents a first in Turkey in terms of an organization to engage in activities on discourse studies. The gathering resources on discriminatory discourse, hate speech, discourse analysis, etc. for the ASULIS Collection established under the Hrant Dink Foundation Library is still in process. The first ASULIS report is prepared with the main support of Open Society Foundation and contributions of Istanbul Policy Center and Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs' MyMedia Programme based on its preparation process during the 2014-2015 period. The sections of the report include short definitions of different concepts (such as hate speech, discriminatory discourse and dangerous speech), the research conducted on hate speech between 2009-2015 by the Foundation, suggestions for the laboratory's methods and areas of work based on the meetings and panels organized during its preparatory process as well as the vision, mission and structure of ASULIS.

The original aim of this book was to provide an updated reprint of J.P. Postgate's "Short Guide to the Accentuation of Ancient Greek" (1924). It has developed considerably during the preparation, still including what was most useful in Postgate but now incorporating much additional material and information based on the latest scholarship. It is intended for those who have already learned some Greek but who wish to acquaint themselves with the workings of the accent system, either for the first time or by way of revision. An introductory part outlines clearly the evidence for our knowledge of Greek accentuation and quotes some of our ancient sources for the sound of the accent. The remainder of the book is designed to facilitate the learning of the accents themselves. Exercises are included throughout. 215p. index Book

Book is fine. ; Ix, 163pp. A Plato Primer introduces students and general readers to the main theses, concepts, and arguments in Plato's philosophy. Plato's thought? Subtle, versatile, and multifaceted? Extends over many decades of composition and many philosophical topics, making it difficult to distill. J. D. G. Evans overcomes this challenge by starting from the premise that there is a core to Plato's philosophy that can be traced through the spectrum of his writings. ; 163 pages
Latin Reader; 182 pages; The comic playscripts by Plautus-the earliest Latin texts we have-made it through the ancient world to reach ours because the moves and verbal jousting found in them have always made people laugh. Plautine comedies span a wide range of idioms, extending from saucy adventures in the sex trade with Father as the fall-guy who foots all bills, to the trouncing of bigmouth trooper by Ms. Hot Stuff; from the fairytale wishes come true of faraway foundlings fished up on a surprise romantic shore, to the caricature gospel that re-stages the myth of the birth of the hero, in true panto style, gods and all. Although there is no such creature as a typical Plautus play, this cannily chosen set of excerpts-ranging from the best- to least-known plays-gives a good sense of how a whole script runs, from opening hush, through brisk cameos and spectacular showstoppers, to final bow. John Hendersons energy, wit, and contagious affection for Plautussnappy Latin (which he calls 'Plautin') take the reader along on a whirlwind, laugh-out-loud tour. His combination of commentary, interpretive remarks, and attention to staging and metatheatrics make this edition a perfect introduction to Plautus, and an incentive for further reading. Special Features * Introduction that is as lively as it is informative * 616 lines of unadapted Latin text from eleven Plautus plays: Asinaria 746-809, Amphitruo 361-462, Captiui 1029-36, Casina 780-854 and 1012-18, Cistellaria 203-29, Curculio 462-86, Menaechmi 77-109 and 351-69, Poenulus 1-45 and 541-66, Pseudolus 1-2 and 394-414, Rudens 938-1044, and Truculentus 482-548 * Notes at the back * Map and five photos * Bibliography and further reading for each play * Appendix on meter * Guide to pronunciation of proper names<br> * Online Latin text, marked for reading aloud * Complete vocabulary
