Une lecture dosee permettra de se familiariser avec les difficultes d'une langue qui apparaitra, a cote d'irregularites et d'exceptions dont elle n'a pas l'apanage, pleine de finesses insoupgonnees. Notre propos, en redigeant ce dictionnaire, a ete de grouper les difficultes de toutes sortes eparses dans les ouvrages speciaux, ou qui, meme, n'ont jamais ete consignees par ecrit. Aussi, le Diction-naire des difficultes de la langue frangaise doit-il repondre aux questions les plus variees que se posent quotidiennement tous ceux qui, a un titre quelconque, sont en contact avec notre langue : ecoliers, etudiants, secretaires, ecrivains, etc., et toutes personnes qui tiennent a honneur de bien parler et de bien ecrire. II doit aussi remettre en memoire des regies oubliees ou attirer l'attention sur des fautes qui, pour etre courantes, n'en sont pas moins grossieres. C'est en lisant cet ouvrage que certains appren-dront, par exemple, qu'on ne doit pas dire " un " azalee ou " une " asterisque, mais " une " azalee, " un " asterisque, genres qui sont consignes depuis toujours dans les dictionnaires; que lisere s'ecrit avec deux accents et que, par consequent, la prononciation liz're est fautive; qu'un impetrant n'est pas celui qui sollicite quelque chose, mais celui qui a obtenu ce qu'il demandait; qu'on ne doit pas dire pareil que, mais pareil a; qu'" Alfred* n'est pas un pingouin, mais un manchot; qu'on ne doit pas employer Creole pour metis ou metis pour mulatre, que mettre a jour n'a pas le meme sens que mettre au jour; que des cheveux calamistres sont ondules au fer et non plaques … (IX)
