Very Fine in a very fine dust jacket. A tight unread copy without any marks or defects. Dust jacket is clean and bright with the publisher s original price of $26.00 intact on the front flap. Comes with archival-quality mylar dust jacket protector. Octavo 587 pages. The Tin Drum originally published in 1959 is Günter Grass's landmark novel of modern German literature here presented in a new translation by Breon Mitchell. Grass who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999 was also the author of "Cat and Mouse" and "Dog Years" completing his celebrated Danzig Trilogy. The novel was adapted into the 1979 film directed by Volker Schlöndorff which won the Palme d Or and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Breon Mitchell s 2009 translation was commissioned to replace Ralph Manheim s 1961 version which was abridged and in places deliberately softened. Manheim with Grass s approval at the time cut entire passages and streamlined others to make the controversial novel more acceptable to English-language readers but the result blunted some of its satirical edge and linguistic density. Mitchell returned to the German text to restore all of the missing material and to render Grass s characteristic wordplay layered puns and syncopated rhythms more faithfully. With Grass s encouragement and oversight the new translation presents the first complete unabridged and stylistically accurate English edition of The Tin Drum one that captures the unsettling and jagged qualities the author intended.
