19023123<p>A very good copy of the English translation of the Saga of Cormac the Skald in the original decorative cloth binding designed by W G Collingwood. In the introduction Collingwood and Stefansson state that their translation is based on the last edition of a 14th century book but that this was compiled from earlier texts. They note that the earlier rough and broken language from the first works has been preserved so that the 14th century version was the most primitive piece of Icelandic prose writing that they had found. This copy has a bright clean binding and the front board has spine have gilt titles and an elaborate gilt design. The front board has some scuffing to the surface with a bump to the bottom corner and light turning to the top corner. The spine has some pulling to the ends. The back board is plain and has a couple of tiny marks. The bottom corner has a small bump and the top corner has light wear. Internally there is a half title with Viking Club details on the verso; frontispiece and decorative title with tissue guard by Collingwood; contents and illustration lists; map; text and index 145pp with colour plate 18 black and white plates map and errata slip; and 2pp of adverts at the rear. The free endpapers are toned and there is light toning to the text paper with the occasional light mark. 8vo - board size 23.3cm x 17.8cm. Nice Firm Clean copy ! Moderate general wear. Spine bottom missing 1 inch on Vol. 2. Size: 8vo 7.75 - 9.75'' tall. This book for the first time fully translated from the Latin by J. Priel with erotic illustrations by A. Puyplat. The Epistolæ Obscurorum Virorum English: Letters of Obscure Men was a celebrated collection of satirical Latin letters which appeared 1515-1519 in Hagenau Germany. They support the German Humanist scholar Johann Reuchlin and they mock the doctrines and modes of living of the scholastics and monks mainly by pretending to be letters from fanatic Christian theologians discussing whether all Jewish books should be burned as un-Christian or not. The work was based upon the real-life public dispute between German humanist Johann Reuchlin and certain Dominican monks especially the formerly Jewish convert Johannes Pfefferkorn who had obtained Imperial authority from Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I to burn all known copies of the Talmud in 1509. The title is a reference to Reuchlin's 1514 book Epistolae clarorum virorum English: Letters of famous/bright men which provided a collection of letters to Reuchlin on scholarly and intellectual matters from eminent German humanists. The Latin adjective obscurus 'obscure' is the opposite of clarus 'bright' used in the title of Reuchlin's book. The letters are addressed to Hardwin von Grätz in Deventer and contain mock accusations against him such as allegation that he had been intimate with Johannes Pfefferkorn's wife Letter XII and that Gratius had defecated his pants in public letter XL. The letters profess to be written by certain ecclesiastics and professors in Germany. The authorship has been a fertile subject of controversy but the main portion of the letters are attributed to the humanists Crotus Rubeanus a.k.a. Johannes Jäger who is said to have originated the idea and the title; Ulrich von Hutten who contributed mainly to the second volume; Erasmus; and Reuchlin. The work is credited with hastening the Protestant Reformation. Pope Leo X excommunicated the authors readers and disseminators of the Epistolæ Obscurorum Virorum in 1517 by citing the fact that the discussed matter of burning all Jewish books especially the Talmud had never been held as a majority view among Christian scholars. A singularly authoritative edition of the "Rule of St. Benedict" by the scholar of the "Rule of the Master" an anonymous collection of monastic precepts composed around 500-530. It was likely used by St Benedict as source material for his own "Rule". The editor of this edition also edited the definitive edition of "Rule of the Master". The study of the Benedictine Rule and the historical evidence concerning it confirms that it was written by Benedict in Italy in the middle of the sixth century. In this edition the authentic text of Benedict whose manuscript tradition is immense and multifaceted is investigated with new certainty and precision in the light of recent research. Apart from the small Italian edition by G. Penco which already dates from 1958 there has been no scientific edition of the Benedictine Rule. It is to fill such a gap that the present work of A. de Vogue and J. Neufville. They prepared for it by publishing seven years ago the first critical edition of the Rule of the Master SC 105-107. In the first three volumes the editors methodically compare Benoit's work with that of the Rule of the Master and the historical evidence concerning it. ith a 50 page introduction extensive footnotes throughout analytic table and multiple indices. The second 3 volumes constitute an analytic "Commentaire Historique et Critique" of the entire rule and its Christian Sources with additional historic commentaries in Volume VI.
